This image from the constellation Orion actually contains four objects: The Flame Nebula (top center), The Horsehead Nebula (bottom center), and NGC 2023 (roughly between the other two). The red color behind the horsehead is IC 434 (the "horsehead" itself is actually a dense cloud of dust obscuring the red glow from behind) is ionized gas that glows, and is an excellent example of an emission nebula. Unfortunately I clipped part of IC 434 and will need to update this image at some point. Image captured 10/24/2006 with a modified Canon 300D though an Orion 80ED refractor on an autoguided Orion Atlas mount. Total exposure time was 38 minutes at ISO 800 |
