Word processing
software is probably the most widely used application of microcomputers. Word processor is
a writing tool. It greatly simplifies the task of preparing documents such as letters,
menus, reports, etc.
Using a word processor is like using a typewriter. You use a keyboard to type your document. However, instead of being immediately printed on a piece of paper, your work is displayed on a screen. Word processing using a computer is faster and more accurate than using a typewriter.
The words on the screen are saved in the
computer memory. They can be modified at any time. The document can be stored on the
computer hard disk or on a floppy disk. This allows the document to be
retrieved at a later date. As the work is stored in an electronic format, it
is easy to make changes and corrections to the text.
The more advanced software packages includes a spelling checker, thesaurus, grammar checker and allow graphics to be included. Other advanced features include numbering paragraphs and pages, adding headers and footers, assembling indexes and glossaries.
The common word processing packages are WordStar, WordPerfect and Microsoft Word.
