Longships in fjord
Scandinavian Studies

This is what I like learning about best of all. Vikings. Icelandic sagas. Snorri Sturlusun is a hero of mine. But not just norsemen in longships, I also like learning about what the Norse peoples did after the era of plunder ended.

They were busy after they settled down and converted to Christianity. They colonized England, Scotland, Ireland, France, the North Sea and Baltic coastlines of Germany, The Netherlands, Russia, Iceland, Greenland, and even Newfoundland. Not all of these colonizations were a success -- they eventually disappeared from Newfoundland and Greenland. Other efforts succeeded too well and blended into the local cultures leaving only the names of their colonies in Normandy (France) and Russia to mark thier achievements. The colonies in the North Atlantic survive to this day as the Scandinavian countries of Iceland, The Faroe Islands, as well as a replanted colonization of Greenland.
