GARMIN eTrex series GPS receiver modifications

Hello eTrex Vista users!

It is possible to get rid of annoying initial intro page. Amended version skips straight onto MAP page as the device is turned on. In order to change it:


- Get version 2.28 of Vista firmware update from GARMIN website.
- Run it and unpack files into temporary directory.
- Edit 016901000228.RGN file applying following changes (hexadecimal address, original value, new value): 

00024024: F5 6D

00024025: 24 BA

00024026: 03 02
- Upload it to a GARMIN receiver normal way

Warning: This applies only to version 2.28 of Vista firmware and nothing else. You may revert to original firmware if you don't like the result or need to look at those animations again. Use it at your own risk.

I've had no problem since modification and succesfully used it both on the ground and in the air. However I do not normally use it for navigation, only for flight analysis back home.

eTrex Legend update (skip intro)


- Get version 2.41 of Legend firmware update.
- Run it and unpack files into temporary directory.
- Edit 017901000241.RGN file applying following changes (hexadecimal address, original value, new value): 
000229DC: 91 49
000229DD: DE 39
0011CB07: 91 7E
- Upload it to a GARMIN receiver normal way

Warning: This applies only to version 2.41 of Legend firmware.

eTrex Venture update (skip intro)


- Get version 2.34 of Venture firmware update.
- Run it and unpack files into temporary directory.
- Edit 015401000234.rgn file applying following changes (hexadecimal address, original value, new value): 
0001F4DC: E1 C9
0001F4DD: 99 FE
0001F4DE: 02 01
000D002F: A7 5B
- Upload it to a GARMIN receiver normal way
