Based on the book made in 1898, this film brought great expectations from Steven Spielberg and his team, it looked to be one of 2005s biggest films and to an extent, it didnt disappoint. This movie was full of action right from the beginning as we see Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) and his two children Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin) attempt to save themselves from these unknown events that are happening. Stealing the only working car in the state, they make their way to Boston to get to the mother or Rachel and Robbie. During the journey they are encountered by various different things such as an angry mob who all try getting in the car saving themselves, this ends up with them losing their car to someone who pointed a gun at the head of Ray. From then on they must escape from the three legged aliens, by any means necessary. On the way out of the city packed with frightened people they see a ferry which they get on trying to escape, this is a bad decision as the tripods(three legged aliens) hunt everyone on the ferry down and capsize it killing almost everyone on it. The Ferrier family, however, manage to escape it yet again and find themselves in a remote location with a series of new people. After this they see the army go by and Robbie decides to himself that he is to join them in their attempts to defeat the enemies. Ray, as a father, tries stopping him and tries to protect him but this is ignored as Robbie joins them. Literally seconds after the way in which Robbie went is met by an explosion which seemingly kills everyone there. Ray trying to protect Rachel now takes cover in a basement underneath with another man. Here they talk to the man about a series of different things such as whether or not they should fight and whom they have lost due to this. Then the aliens get in there and the three inside hide from the aliens coming to their success, it is only when they get outside that the man is killed and Ray and Rachel are captured and sucked into a prison like place by the aliens. What happens there? Watch the movie to find out.
Verdict: The action is entertaining but the ability for normal people to escape from these all the time as well as other unrealistic aspects give this the score:
82/100
