| In the 50th year of the competition Liverpool are the champions of Europe for the 5th time and this time get to keep the trophy for good. | Liverpool struggled to qualify for the knock out stages. They had 1-0 wins against Deportivo and a 2-0 win against Monaco. Unfortunately they were beaten 1-0 by both Monaco and olympiakos as well. They also drew against Deportivo. They had to beat Olympiakos in their final game by 2 clear goals - a big ask. It looked like Liverpool were out in the 80th minute a 1-1 draw not being good enough but there was hope. In the 81st minute Neil mellor scored and in the 86th Steven Gerrard scored a wonder volley that sent Anfield into ecstasy. Liverpool were through! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Two brilliant performances from Liverpool saw them cruising into the quarter finals. In the 1st leg they got a great 3-0 lead and looked to have secured a win over 2 legs. However a late vital away goal gave Leverkusen hope. This hope was short lived as in the 2nd leg (in Germany) Bayern did no better. | In the quarter finals liverpool faced a very tought test with Italian giants and finalists of 2 years ago, Juventus. This was expected to be a step too far for a team struggling in the league but Liverpool matched Juventus and in the 1st leg they won 2-1. They held on to a 0-0 draw in the second leg to reach the semis. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Everyone was very excited when the semi-finals were announced because an all English semi-final meant we would once again have a team representing us in the final. Chelsea had a champions League expert managing them: Jose Mourhino. He brought the cup to an unfancied Porto the year before and looked like he might be doing it again this time with spending mad Chelsea. the fact that Chelsea were looking for a treble though had taken it's toll. They were tired and missing key players. No-one took hold of the 1st leg and it ended 0-0 with Lampard missing a great chance. After a few minutes of the 2nd leg a controversial goal was scored by Luis garcia for Liverpool. It was given but TV later proved that it wasn't over the line. | Liverpool and AC Milan both have great history in Europe only bettered by Real Madrid. Liverpool were certainly the underdogs but wanted to win the trophy for the 5th time as you keep it after 5 times of winning it. Liverpool already had a tough job on their hand facing AC Milan in the final when they conceded an early free kick. It wasn't a good free kick but Maldini found it and volleyed into the back of the net. liverpool made a good response with 1 or 2 chances afterwards but AC Milan were still having a lot of chances themselves including a shot cleared off the line. Kewell who had been place in the side after a while out had to go off on 20 mins injured with Smicer coming on. It seemed like Liverpool would go into half time 1 down and in desperate need of inspiration. But 6 mintues before half time Liverpool lost a penalty appeal and a quick counter attack saw Shevchenko past to crespo who finished to make the game 2-0. It was 3-0 when Kaka put in a perfect through ball that crespo finished fantastically with a chip past Dudek. Liverpool were in an impossible situation at half time. They were being thrashed. Finally though at half-time Hamann came on for Finnan. Once Liverpool settled again Riise whipped in a great cross for gerrard who headed home. The scoreline wasn't so bad anymore. Dida then let a Smicer shot slip through his hands 2 mins later. GAME ON. A great passing movement saw gerrard into the area and he was clipped by Gattuso. Penalty! Alonso took the penalty which was saved by Dida but Alonso managed to somehow hit in the rebound. Riise almost made it 4-3 to Liverpool when he hit a powerful shot that was saved. Traore then had to save Liverpool by clearing off the line. The game went to extra time with few chances being made. In the last minute though Dudek made an unbelievable double-save from Schevchenko from 2 yards. This meant a penalty shoot out. Dudek started some funny dancing and Serghino skied his kick for Milan. Hamman scored. Dudek then made a brilliant save from pirlo. Cisse, then Tomasson scored. Riise had his pen saved. Kaka' and Smicer scored their kicks. Andriy had to score for AC to stay in it but he shot at the middle and Dudeks fingers saved it.The greatest comeback in European final history. Liverpool: champs league winners.
