Notes for RICHARD BEAUFORD:

Richard Beauford in 1635 was examined by ministers of the Church of England as to his loyalty to the king, Charles I, and at age 18 emigrated on the ship Elizabeth, from Garvesend, England, to settle in Lancaster, Virginia.

6. JOHN6 BUFORD (THOMAS5, THOMAS4, JOHN3, RICHARD2 BEAUFORD, JOHN1 BEAUFORT) was born September 01, 1717 in Lancaster County, Virginia, and died September 17, 1787 in Culpepper County, Virginia. He married JUDITH EARLY 1735 in Lancaster, Virginia.

Notes for JOHN BUFORD:

John and Judith settled in Broomfield Parrish, Culpepper County, Virginia, on a tract of land situated on the Rapid Ann and Beautiful Run, the deed which bears the date August 9, 1735. John became one of the largest landowners of the county. His homestead was acquired from William Phillips of Orange, St. Marks Parrish, on the 25th day of June 1739. John Beauford died in 1787 and his will does not mention his wife; it is presumed she preceeded him to the grave.

Notes for JUDITH EARLY:

Family tradition says that Judith was an Early, but there is a possibility she was Judith Early Philippe, daughter of Count Phillippe and Miss Early. No proof of the Phillippe de Richbourge marriage has been found after many years of research.

                   Notes for HENRY LEWIS:

                  Henry was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He built his home about four miles above

                  Criglersville, Virginia, on the side of Double Top Mountain. His first wife Ann died around 1785 and

                   in 1794 at the age of 70 he married Catherine Twyman, who died March 22, 1825.

         iii. JAMES BUFORD, b. 1740, Bromfield Parish, Culpepper County, Virginia; d. Aft. 1798, Scott

               County, Kentucky; m. ELIZABETH BRAMBLETT, July 14, 1761, Bedford County, Virginia.

                 Notes for JAMES BUFORD:

                 James settled in Bedford County when it was first formed with his three brothers. He became a 

                 prominent citizen and land owner. He was one of the pioneers who first laid out the town of Liberty

                 (now Bedford) for the new County Seat; was a presiding justice for many years; a member of the

                 House of Burgess in 1778 and in 1782 was appointed by the court to let the contract for the erection

                 of the Court House, Prison and Stock. He was one of the trustees of Liberty in 1786. In the

                 Revolutionary Archives of the Virginia State Militia, under the date of March 22, 1777, Captain James

                 Buford was allowed pay, rations, etc., for his company the 15th inst., 997 pounds, 1 shilling, 9 pence.

                 James was the executor of the estate of his brother John and guardian of his children.

7. JOHN THOMAS7 BUFORD (JOHN6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4, JOHN3, RICHARD2 BEAUFORD, JOHN1 BEAUFORT) was born May 05, 1736 in Bromfield Parrish, Culpepper, County, Virginia, and died October 10, 1774 in Point Pleasant, Bedford County, Virginia. He married ANNE WATTS 1756 in Virginia.

Notes for JOHN THOMAS BUFORD:

John Thomas, known as Thomas, was an officer in the Colonial Army and served under Braddock, Washington, and Byrd. He married Ann Watts in 1756 and lived near what now is Montvale on the Holstien Plantation, not far from the old Block House, which was erected by the Whites for protection against the Indians.

In 1774, when trouble with the Indians on the western frontier necessitated sending an army to drive them back, Thomas Buford raised a volunteer company in Bedford County, and joining General Andrew Lewis beyond the Blue Ridge, marched with him on to Point Pleasant, and was killed in that famous battle on October 10, 1774.
