My Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother |
| Lafayette "Fate" Hill was the youngest son of William P. Hill & Lucinda Tucker Hill. He was born on March 16, 1862 and died on his birthday March 16, 1917. He was 55 years old at the time of his death. Cause of death is listed as dying of pneumonia fever buried at Hickory Creek Cemetery, Patrick Arkansas, Madison, County. He married Nancy LeMaster on May 10, 1886 by Nancys grandfather Daniel Blevins, Justice of the Peace and a Primitive Baptist minister. Lafayette was just barely 3 years old when his father died in the confederate POW camp in Alton, Ill. Times were very hard for Lafayette and his family growing up without his father. It was told to me during interviews with several older family members that Lafayette loved to tease and pull pranks. He was a farmer and it is believed that he may have worked at a sawmill from time to time in or near Patrick, Arkansas in Madison County. Lafayette, several of his sons along with his brother Wiley Anderson Hill were involved in the making and selling of moonshine. Times were touch and mooshining was not an uncommon business in this area it was about the only way to keep food on the table. They also consumed a lot of their homemade product. Lafayettes wife Nancy was a very dark skinned, dark eyed short petite lady. Nancy was liked by all that knew her and she was somewhat of a fortuneteller. She would read tea leaves, coffee grounds and chicken bones. Family lore has said that Nancy could cure chronic hiccups. People that had hiccups for days and weeks would come to Nancy to be cured. Children especially liked Nancy because she would tell heir fortunes. After Lafayette died Nancy married 3 other times the last was a man named Derry. Nancy is buried in Little Cemetery Seminole, Oklahoma. Billie Hill Reed daughter of Lafayette was eight when her father died and did not remember too much about him. She did remember one story about how her mother Nancy use to get angry at Lafayette when she would take pains smoothing the feather beds and he would put his hat or coat on one of them to make a wrinkle just to tease her. Nancy a very short stout women would put her hands on her hips and say con same you Fate! I have no idea what con same you meant but it always go a big chuckle out of Lafayette who was said to have been a tall handsome man that laughed a lot (Story told by Doris Baumberger) |
