Description of Intradunal Pond

Intradunal Pond contains many different types of plant-life and many animal life.  Intradunal Pond seemed like a very quiet and peaceful place.  At the time when we got to the Indiana dunes, there was not much water present at Intradunal Pond.  This is where we found Sand cherry plants.  The plant was bright and colorful with its red leaves.

Botanical name:     Prunus Besseyi

Family Name:     Rosaceae

Nativity:     Sand Cherry is native to the Chantry Dunes, MacGregor Point, Prounincial Park and Dorcas Bay.

Optimum Growing Conditions:     The sand cherry withstands heat, cold, wind, and drought.  For growing conitions, the sand cherry needs full to partial sahde, moderate watering and sandy soil or clay loam. 

Practical Uses: The cherries of the sand cherries provide a great food source for many species of birds.

Foliage:    The sand cherry is silvery-green and shiny. In the fall, color ranges from a bronze to a red.

Fruit:     It has white flowers in April and produces heavy crops of black cherries in the summer time.

Bark:    The bark of the sand cherry is very hard making this plant very strong and hard.  The bark is also smooth and reddish-brown on young stems, rough and gray on older stems
