Emily jumps at life as a film star

EMILY Browning's two brothers think she is the best sister in the world.

The 14-year-old Melbourne actor is about to spend six months in Los Angeles starring in the $US100 million ($148 million) blockbuster adventure film Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events alongside Jim Carrey and Meryl Streep -- with her siblings Nicholas, 8, and Matthew, 6, in tow.

"They've told all their friends they are going to America to hang out with Jim Carrey," Emily told The Australian yesterday.

"I think they think they'll be going to the movies with him or something, they just love him -- they know every line in (Carrey's 1997 comedy) Liar Liar. I'm just scared I'll get fired because I'll be laughing too much."

In some ways Emily is like a normal teenager who giggles a lot and wants to hang out with her girlfriends all the time. But in others she is like a seasoned Hollywood star who talks blue screens and post-production like other teens talk boys and fashion.

She has had roles in three movies including 2002's Ghost Ship and last year's Ned Kelly (she played Ned's sister Grace).

Her role as Violet Baudelaire in the Lemony Snicket movie is a dream come true for Emily, who started acting at eight and does school by correspondence.

The film is based on the popular children's series of books about three wealthy kids whose parents are killed in a fire and they then have to live with a distant relative who is plotting to seize their fortune.

Emily, who will use an American accent picked up from watching Sesame Street as a child, said she liked the role because it is "not a cheesy kids' movie". "It's a great part," she said. "It's got a gothic feel to it and the kids are great characters, they are very funny and dry."

Another bonus for Emily, apart from working alongside Carrey, Streep and potentially Jude Law, who is negotiating to play the narrator, is having a Hollywood trailer on the studio backlot.

So did she feel like a star yet?

"It's really strange, when I was in my trailer it made me feel a bit overwhelmed, I kind of thought I don't really belong here," she laughed. "But hopefully I'll get used to it."
