Day 9: Garmitch

The last day of this trip... we woke up at a decent time to go to Mad King Ludwig II's castle, Schloss Hohenschwangau.  Apparently the king was obsessed with the Swan Knight and the Medieval times.  And after hearing about his "friendship" with Wagner our whole tour group believed that the king must've been in love with the composer.  The castle is beautiful inside (can't say the same for the exterior - a creamy peach colour) and my favourite room is the King's bedroom.  The ceiling was painted night-sky blue and he had crystal tubes embedded into the ceiling so that at night it would glitter like stars.  It was a shame we weren't allowed to take pictures.

Another one of Ludwig II's summer retreat... the one which Disney is modelled after.

The final day ended with a "special" dinner up in the mountains.   There were too many bones in the trout and then it got really cold halfway through dinner. (Did I mention we were sitting outdoors?) Everyone, beer in hand, filed into a cozy little room for dessert - hot berries with icecream... yum.  Then after lots of hugging and address exchanging, we ended the final day thinking how lucky we were that we didn't have to get up at 3 in the morning to go into Munich for our flight home.   (Yup, people who had to fly to Cincinnati had to leave THAT early in the morning.)

A little souvenir I nicked from the last place we dined...
