"Prisoner!"
Andrew Jackson Tingle
Born February 16, 1845 in Craven County, N.C. to Josiah and Elizabeth Fanning Tingle.
Andrew had six brothers and sisters:
Rhoda Tingle, b. November 1, 1829, Perry W. Tingle, b. February 14, 1831, John F. Tingle, b. August 15, 1833, Gidean Tingle, b. March 5, 1836, Josiah Tingle, Jr. b. September 17, 1838, Levi W. Tingle, b. June 25, 1842.
During the War Between the States, Andrew fought with the Confederacy along with three of his brothers, Gidean, Josiah, and Levi.
All four brothers were garrisoned at Fort Macon, an Army fort along the North Carolina coast. The fort was attacked and taken over by Union forces in April 1862.
Gidean was seriously wounded during the battle, and died shortly thereafter. Andrew, Josiah, and Levi were all taken prisoner, and later exchanged for Union prisoners being held by the Confederacy.
Andrew promptly returned to the Confederate army. He was captured a second time and imprisoned from 1863-1864.
Andrew married Harriet Rebecca Kinsall on September 15, 1870. Harriet's mother, Rachel burned a bridge to prevent Union troops from crossing onto her land. These same troops took Harriet's pony, which she never forgot. Andrew and Harriet had five children before Andrew's death on May 13, 1888 in Pamlico City, N.C.
