The Lemites have a rich and varied (to put it mildly) culture. Whether it's the Annual Lemite Picnic, the Wet Fur Contest, the Whistle 'til You Puke Competition, or the Way-Off-Road Race, there is no shortage of things to keep Lemites from being bored and remembering that they live on a radioactive dump of a planet.
Lemites have an abundant and earthy sense of humor, taking great delight in hand buzzers, squirt guns, and pinning 'kick me' signs on unsuspecting visitors. Curiously enough, Lemites seem to have a hatred of circus clowns.
There are actually two Lemite languages. The traditional and most commonly used Lemite language is based a series of clicks and chirps, commonly referred to as 'burrow talk'. The second is a series of whistles, used outside the burrow to warn of danger and for long-distance communciation.
With the arrival of human explorers in the 160s, the Lemites came into contact with the Imperial language. Its use, however was limited. The Patrols and the Lemite leadership generally used a 'broken' or pidgin form of the language.
198 saw a revival of the Imperial language among Lemite traders and the leadership. The Kazerickii began trading again with Korlus, and learning Kazereck was nearly impossible (the language consists of pheromes). Imperial became the common language by necessity when the Kazerickii were granted sovereignty over the Lexikonn system in 200.
Myrrian is another minor language. In 196, the Myrrians visited the Lemites. They left behind a Myrship, along with a Myrrian cadre to train new crews and provide technical support. As a result, quite a few of the Lemite technicians, crew, soldiers, and starport personnel now speak a form of Myrrian, and most Lemites know a few Myrrian words.
The last language is used by Lemite scientists and engineers, is the Old-Scaled-One language derivation, SEDian (spoken by the successor race to the O.S.O., the SED). SEDian proved itself useful in translating fragments of ancient texts and deciphering technical relics. However, it is considered a "dead" language.
Lemites don't neglect the arts. There is an annual event at the Lemite Picnic, the Whistle 'Til You Puke competition, which tests whistlers' abilities in loudness, musical ability, traditional whistles, and lastly, endurance. The champion gets the title "The Lemite Whistler". The female parent of course is known as "Whistler's Mother".
A burrowing race, Lemites have a strong sense of togetherness, though this has been weakened by the 'Black 25' nuclear attack, and the loss of all but twenty-nine Burrows. The Lemite Autonomous Region established the Annual Lemite Picnic as a sort of counterbalance and to celebrate the famed 'Rat Patrol' revenge-attack upon the Community Periphery Director. The Picnic is five days of speeches, drinking, eating, music, drinking, a whistling contest, eating, games, eating, more contests, drinking, eating... (you get the picture). The highlight of the Picnic is the Wet Fur Contest, judged by the Head Squek.
Curiously enough, a few months after the Picnic there always seems to be a slight rise in the number of Lemite pups born. It's a common among Lemites to say that an especially cheerful Lemite "must have been a Picnic Pup".
Religion plays a significant role in Lemite culture. Most Lemites are members of the Church of the Rubber Chicken, whose precepts were taken (detractors say stolen) from various comedian-philosophers. There are two other minor religions, plus the Cult of Awbis Rozenoz.
For sport, Lemites love to race around while intoxicated in modified and much-repaired all-terrain vehicles. These were reportedly sold to them by a notorious mercantile Company, who was more than happy to get all that junk out of its warehouses. The event of the year is the infamous Xuppy Planet Wide Geiger-Matic Frantic- Imbibing And Cross-Country Way-Off Road Race (a 500 kilometer race through some of Xuppy's worst terrain). The winner gets free eats for a year.
