So far we have driven 7500 miles, thru 3 provinces of Canada and 20 states. Now, thats a road trip.
Welcome to our story of our trek through Texas and New Mexico. First let me start by saying that there is a whole lot of nothing for hours at a time down here! The scenery is very diverse also which makes the long drives more interesting. We stopped by San Antonio to do some sightseeing and visited the Alamo. In short, if you dont know what the Alamo is, it is a fort/shrine where Texas got their butt kicked by Mexico years ago. It then turned into the battle cry Remember the Alamo! when revenge was had over Mexico, and Texas became its own country. The San Antonio river zig zags throughout the city and we did a boat ride around what is considered Riverwalk, a shopping and eating meca. The next night we stayed in Pecos, Texas which is virtually a ghost town. It is known for being the birth place of rodeos. We then headed into New Mexico and spent the day at Carlsbad Caverns. These caverns are said to be the largest in the Western Hemishpere. There is an elevator that takes you down 750 feet into the earth in 58 seconds, not too shabby! That night we stayed for a bat flight. That is when hundreds of thousands of bats come out of the cave to go feed at dusk. It was amazing, our pictures dont do it justice. All the black dots you see are bats flying very, very fast. We stayed only about 15 mins and the bats were still pouring out as we left. It was truly a unique experience.
We spent the next few days in New Mexico visiting my friend Terri and her son, John. John is turning 1 tomorrow, hes adorable. Terris friend Ginger and her son Alexander were also visiting from Phoenix. Terri and I met 12 years ago on a Mexican cruise and we have kept in touch evern since through letters and email. We also went to visit her mom, Mary who I also had met 12 years ago. Huge thanks to Terri for sharing space with us! Today, we went to a place called White Sands. It is essentially a huge beach in the middle of the dessert made of pure white gypsum sand. Not quite sure what gypsum is, but its white and shiny and the wind forms huge dunes out of it. The dunes are so big we saw people sledding on them! As we were driving through the desert, we saw a stealth bomber fly by and turn on its side so we were able to see the triangle cockpit. It was unexpected and awesome! Then we spent pretty much the rest of the day at a Jeep dealership having our radiator replaced. Not in our plans I may add but it was discovered at a time where we were able to get to a Jeep place right away and have it fixed. Our tour of Arizona begins tomorrow.
