High Time to Awake Out of Sleep

Rom 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed.

This is a call for us to acknowledge the time or nearness of the return of Christ. We, like the five wise virgins in the parable need to awake out of sleep because His return is nearer now than when we first believed.

Mark 13:36 "Lest, coming suddenly, He find you sleeping."

It is not desirable for us to be found sleeping when our Lord returns. When we become inattentive to the things of the Spirit and the signs all around us of His near return, we fall short of our calling.

1 Thes 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as [do] others; but let us watch and be sober.

The message is clear. We could fall asleep and become inattentive to the things of the spirit and the signs around us and this could make us fall short.

Matt 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

The ten virgins in this parable represent the Christian church which is also described as the bride of Christ. The parable of the ten virgins will be acted out when Christ returns to earth. Those of us who do not have oil in our lamps in that day will be shut out and not allowed to go into the marriage feast and all the rewards associated with it at that time.

Rev 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

Indeed, we will be glad and rejoice if we find that we have been found ready in that day. It will be the unfortunate experience of some to be kept out of the marriage and to watch from afar what the others is rewarded.

Rev 19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

Here is a reminder, how are we in our Christian walk? Will we have righteous acts and a faithful walk that will result in our being granted fine, clean, bright linen in that day?

Luke 17:34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two [men] in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.

This is a warning that there when the time comes for the rapture, there will be some taken and others that are left behind.

Luke 17:35 Two [women] shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

This is another warning that when the time comes for the rapture, there will be some taken and others that are left. Notice that they are portrayed grinding wheat here. In other words they are workers in the harvest. So even among them one is taken and the other left. This suggests to us that on that day there may be some of us in our church looking around and seeing all the empty seats only to realize we are among those left behind.

Luke 17:36 Two [men] shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Again we have some working in the harvest. These are actually in the field working in the harvest yet even among those workers, some will be taken and the others left.

Matt 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

While it is a popular thought among many Christians today, scripture does not support the whole church we are attending being taken on that day, but rather only those who are ready and active in our Lord's service.

Luke 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and [so] that day come upon you unawares.

Here is the warning; we are to be alert and active in our Lord's service. If we go about living like the others around us, that day may come upon us unexpectedly, without warning.

Luke 21:35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

There are some who would rather view the events connected with the return of Christ to be local to Jerusalem and Israel as that is where He will return to when He comes. However it will affect everyone on earth. We will not be able to sit back and view it as if it was an event in an area remote to us and watch it on TV or read about it in the newspaper. It will affect everyone and be felt all over the world. Notice the use of the snare. A snare is a trap hunters use to capture small animals. It will be a snare on all those who are not prepared for it, and for those who do not expect it.

Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

This is a warning to all of us. We must be diligent in the service of our Lord. There will be a point of time when we will be examined to see if we are worthy to escape all those things. When that time comes it will be too late to prepare or to go out to find oil to put into our lamps as the five foolish virgins did in the parable in Matt 25:1. We need to be diligent in our service and application of God's will to our lives so that it may come to pass that we may be counted worthy to escape all these things and to stand before the Lord Jesus Christ in that day.

1 Pet 4:17 For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that obey not the gospel of God?

There is to be a separation between those who diligently seek Him now and those who do not. Those who do not obey the gospel of god do not have a bright future before them when Christ comes back.

Heb 11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

This is wise counsel for us now. We who desire to be rewarded by being among those taken when the last trumpet sounds as Christ comes back, need to be diligently seeking Him now. There are many who are diligently seeking other things now, jobs, fame, fortune and other earthly pursuits and they are likely to find themselves left behind in that day.
