Fences Lesson 1

What does Troy mean to Rose (descriptions on Page 5 of the book)?
Rose feel that troy is the guy out of all the men he was the one for her.
How does she see him?
she sees him as a fine an illuminating.
How do Troy & Rose communicate?  Troy doesn't respect Rose because he don't know how to show his love to her and talks to her like he owns her.

Lesson 2 Fences
1. How does Troy react? Why does he react in such a way?
why doesn’t he want to acknowledge that times have change?
what is Troy afraid of?.
 What does he say about Jackie Robinson?
 What does this statement tell us about the kind of man Troy is?
 Why can’t he acknowledge J.R. as an outstanding player?

Troy don't like his son playing football or being a musician because he thinks that they won't make it because in his days he couldn't make it as a baseball player because he thinks life is unfair and only white people can succeed. He doesn't acknowledge that times have change because he is afraid of the world changing. He says "Jackie Robinson is not a good baseball player, there are many other black people that are better than him."

2. What kind of baseball player does Troy remember himself as?

 What does this statement tell us about the kind of man Troy is?
 Why can’t he acknowledge J.R as an outstanding player?

He thinks he is a great baseball player. He didn't acknowledge Jackie Robinson as an outstanding player because he was very jealous that he succeed and he couldn't make it

3.How might Troy’s frustrations hurt the ones he loves? He thinks that color people can't do any good and not supporting his son's dream who wants to play football and be a musician

Lesson 3 Fences

What sort of stories does Troy tell? Troy tells his family and friends his stories about meeting the devil, death, and he always over exaggerate them and says stuff that doesn't seem normal
why does he tell these stories? He tells them to explain things he don't know and cant explain
what do they tell us about him? They tell us he is an over exaggerative man and he has a low education level like he's never been to school
How does Troy describe (death)? Troy describes death as a man with a sickle
what does he mean by a fastball on the outside corner?
when did Troy meet death? He met death in the middle of July, 1941
why does he describe death as a person? He describes death as a person who is out to get him and he fights him so he will not lose to death
How does he confront him (death)? He told death that he is not ready to die yet and he threw death's sickle and then he wrestled death for three days and three nights
Why does Troy tell this magnificently exaggerated story about death? He tells it because he almost died but he recovered
How does Troy believe he must deal with death? Troy has to watch out for his back for death and he will fight him every time he faces death but he knows one day he will end up losing to death
 

Lesson 4 Fences

What sort of relationship might take place between an adult and a child whose parent wasn’t there for him/her when he was growing up?

How is Lyons described? Lyons is a 34 years old man who dislikes his father and who wants to be a musician and asks his father for money every time he comes to see him
How old was Troy when he had Lyons? Troy had Lyons when he was 19 years old
What sort of ritual do they go through each time Troy gets paid? Troy comes to see his father and asks his father for ten dollars and then they always argue but he always get the money at the end from Rose
Why doesn’t Troy just give Lyons the money instead of going through his ritual? Troy disapproves Lyon's dream of becoming a musician and not getting a job. He thinks Lyon's is lazy and he's 34 years old he should be able to support himself already
What does this tell us about Troy? Lyon said Troy didn't raise him when he was younger and he wasn't a good father
How do Lyons and Troy get along? Why so? They both don't see each other's view and they are always arguing
How does Troy describe the devil? Troy described the devil as a white person with good clothes and everything and a clipboard in his hand
How does the devil find Troy? Pg.14
Who is the devil to Troy? The devil is a  white loaner who gives you credit but you have to pay every month ten dollars and Troy is scared to stop paying every month

lesson 5 Fences

1. Analyze-  What is the purpose of a monologue?( Pg, 13, 14,15)

Troy’s monologue re: The devil

Troy describes the devil as "a white fellow with nice clothes and a clipboard". The devil is a loaner who gave credit to Troy but he had to pay interest every month and Troy is afraid of him missing a payment and the devil coming back

2.  Illustrate death in Troy's eyes (make a collage or draw a picture of Death to Troy's point of view).

Lesson 6 Fences

  1. What is a fence? A fence is a barrier not letting things get in or get out. It can be protecting you from any bad things or it can trap you

  2. What  sort of problems do Troy and Rose have? Troy and Rose have a bad communication  and they are barely making money and putting food on their tables

  3. Why does Rose want Troy to build a fence? So it can be a protection around the family

  4. What is a fence to Rose? To Rose it is a meaning of protection and love for the family

  5. Why doesn’t Troy finish building the fence? He is always doing something else and doesn't have time to do it

  6. What is a fence to Troy? To Troy is means that he's trapped inside the fence

  7. Why doesn’t he want to be kept in?

  8. What are some handicaps that people have? Some people have missing legs, arms or some people can't see or hear

  9. How do people overcome their disabilities? Usually their other senses become better and they use it to substitute for their disability

  10. How are normal people also handicapped? Normal people make mistakes and they are not all so smart

  11. What is Gabe’s handicap? Pg. 24 Gabe has a metal plate in his head and he thinks he is an archangel

  12. What is Troy’s? He is naive and stubborn and believes in his own ideas

  13. In what ways does Gabe seem severely handicapped? He talks very funny about God and he believes he's an archangel and he carries a trumpet all day and sells a basket of fruits and vegetables

  14. How does Gable seem more aware of things than he appears? He moved out because he knew it is a trouble for Troy and Gabe thought he was mad at him because he moved out. He was talking about God  and having him in the book for judgment because he suspected Troy was doing something bad

15. How does Troy react to Gabe?

  2. What does marriage mean to Rose( having loving and caring for a family; being faithful; Sticking by ) To rose it is to be united and having everyone stick by each other and caring and helping each other

  3. Why does Tory become violent? Rose said Troy always talk about what he gives but she says he takes too

  4. How does Troy react when confronted with the truth?  He got mad and starting hurting Rose

  5. How has Troy shut out all the people who care about him? Troy doesn't show his feelings to anyone and has a put a fence around himself

  6. Why does Rose speak out later? Rose speaks out to try to stop Troy from hitting Cory

  7. Why doesn’t Troy hit Cory? Troy didn't want to be like his father

  1. What has life become at the Maxons? ( not speaking, Troy not coming home after work; Running in & out) Everyone doesn't like Troy and is far away from Troy and doing their own things, while Troy goes to see Alberta everyday after work

  2. How has Troy betrayed Gabe? Troy signed a paper saying that the Hospital can take Gabe and take care of him

  3. Read pg.78-79 : What does Troy ask of Rose? How does Rose answer? Troy asks Rose if she can take care of Raynell as her very own daughter and Rose says yes

  4. Read pg 80-90: How has Troy/Bono’s relationship changed? Pg82 Troy and Bono don't see each other anymore because they are both have different jobs and doing their own things now

  5. How does Troy Confront death? Troy swings the bat around in the yard and tells Death he's ready for him but he isn't going to be easy to take

  6. Why does he now say he’s going to build a fence? He realizes everything's changing he wants to protect his family and keep death out

  7. How does Cory come to terms with his father? Pg 90-95 ( Setting: 1945 (8 years later)) He joined the army and didn't become a football player

  8. How has Lyons followed in Tory’s footsteps? He didn't become who he wanted to become like his father and his marriage was unsuccessful
