Tongkat Ali Supplement

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia jack) is a small tree found in the jungles throughout Malaysia and Southeat Asia. It is commonly known as Tongkat Ali in Malaysia and Singapore, Piak or Tung Saw in Thailand, and Pasak Bumi in Indonesia. The Tongkat Ali tree can grow up to about 12 meters in height. Natives consider every part of the tongkat ali tree as medicine. Tongkat Ali is used as a tonic, to treat malaria, and as an aphrodisiac.  In the old days, tongkat ali roots had to be brewed for long hours to get a bitter extract. Now tongkat ali, which literally means Ali's cane, is packed in pill or "tea-bag" form and mixed with regular coffee or tea. Tongkat ali coffee and tea are now sold in Malaysia's roadside hawker stalls, supermarkets and even at restaurants in posh hotels. Euro Plus is a potent version of tongkat ali. Tongkat ali is available in various extract potencies, and all of these versions appear to be effective.

What the Research Says about Tongkat Ali:

Aphrodisiac

Over the past few years, there have been quite a number of studies that have shown tongkat ali  to have libido-boosting properties. The effects of tongkat ali were studied on the libido of male rats after dosing them with up to 800 mg per kilogram of body weight twice daily for 10 days (this is quite a high dose if the same dose is given to humans-- do the math: 800 mg tongkat ali powder times 70 k). Results showed that tongkat ali produced a dose-dependent increase in mounting frequency, that is, the number of times the male rats tried to mount the female rats increased as the dose given to the rats increased. In addition, the rats given tongkat ali displayed more frequent and vigorous licking and anogenital sniffing towards the receptive females. Furthermore, the rats dosed with tongkat ali  spent more time grooming their genitals compared to the rats who were not given the plant. Genital grooming may be interpreted as self-pleasuring since the rats were most likely enjoying the sensation of touching themselves. The researchers noticed another interesting finding: while the rats who had not received tongkat ali showed normal behavior within the cage such as exploration and climbing the cage wall, the rats given tongkat ali stayed around the females instead of exploring the cage. In human terms this may be interpreted as a man spending more time in the kitchen helping his wife wash the dishes than in the den lounged in a Lazyboy chair absorbed by a baseball game :). Tongkat ali also increased the frequency of the rats' erections.

Tongkat Ali and Cancer

Beta-carboline alkaloids isolated from tongkat ali have demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against human lung cancer (A-549) and human breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines. In plain English, this means that some compounds in Tongkat ali can kill cancer cells. The practical significance of this finding in humans is not clear at this time.

Tongkat Ali and Malaria

Interestingly, scientists have found that, in addition to its sex-enhancing effects, compounds within tongkat ali  have anti-malarial properties.

Tongkat Ali Mechanism of action

Very little is known regarding the mechanisms of action of tongkat ali. Recent studies indicate that the root contains several compounds including beta-carboline alkaloids and quassinoid-type glycosides, including eurycomaoside. How these compounds and many others in tongkat ali influence hormoneal reliase or the human sexual response is not clearly understood at this time. I have read promotional material by some vitamin companies regarding tongkat ali that it enhances testosterone production or release, however I have not been able to definitively confirm this claim through a Medline search.

Availability of Tongkat Ali

Tongkat Ali is sold as a powder, and in capsules, sometimes mixed with other herbs. There are a number of extracts available in various potencies, and since each company has a different way of extracting, and since there are no established standards, it is difficult to give dosage recommendations that would be consistently effective. In addition to tongkat ali being available as a raw powder, it is sold as a 4:1, 5:1, 20:1 and a 100:1 concentration. At the higher concentrations it becomes difficult to dose appropriately since the margin of error in terms of effectiveness versus side effects becomes more challenging.

Tongkat Ali Side Effects

One of the shortcomings of Tongkat Ali is that it can easily cause insomnia, and lack of sleep can lower sex drive. Therefore it is somewhat difficult to find the right dose that works without causing this insomnia, and that's where an experienced herbalist who has wide knowledge with this plant is crucial in terms of formulating the right product with the right amount and extract potency of tongkat ali. High doses can also cause increased body temperature. Some people find that when they take a high dose, they become restless and impatient, perhaps easily angered. Long term effects of tongkat ali on human consumption are not known. It is best, until we learn more, to not take tongkat ali continuously without breaks. Some people prefer tongkat ali every other day, or 2 days on, 2 days off, or just a couple of days a week. In fact, taking tongkat ali 2 days a week minimizes any potential tongkat ali side effects.

Tongkat Ali questions

Q. Is it possible that chronic use, increasing over time due to tolerance, of OTC herbals such as Tribulus Terrestris, Tongkat Ali, etc. can lead to secondary hypogonadism due, such as the HTPA axis being so imbalanced that it cannot easily be restarted?

A. The hormonal influence of tongkat ali, tribulus terrestris, and many other herbs, when used on a chronic basis, is not fully known since human studies are few, but this, and other scenarios, are theoretically possible. We always recommend people take breaks from the use of herbs. In most people, tongkat ali only needs to be taken 2 or 3 days a week.

Q. What is the difference in strength between tongkat ali 400 mg and tongkat ali 100:1 (25 mg)?

A. it's difficult to say, some people prefer 25 mg while we have feedback just the opposite, others prefering tongkat ali 400 mg to tongkat ali 100:1 (25 mg). Many people actually prefer using half a capsule of tongkat ali 400 mg 2 days on, 2 or more days off.

Q.  I have been taking tablets of 80 mg Tongkat Ali at ratio of 100:1 but I am also considering tongkat ali root powder, 400mg capsules. I need to know what the ratio this tongkat ali product is based on so i know how many tablets equals the dosage i am presently taking.

A. Herbs are available as the regular full specturm powder and also in various extract potencies. There is a misconception that if an extract is 10:1 that means it is 10 times as potent, or if it is 100:1 then it is 100 times more potent, but that is not the case. When an herb is concentrated, sometimes some of the other active ingredients are removed since the manufacturers focus on a particular substance within an herb rather than the full spectrum of potential beneficial substances. Many people find full spectrum tongkat ali 400 mg regular powder to be too potent and half the amount works well. We often suggest using less tongkat ali since side effects occur on high doses including disturbed sleep and high body temperature and irritability. If insomnia occurs, that can take away the positive tongkat ali benefit of the sexual enhancement since sleep is important for libido. Most people prefer taking half a capsule of tongkat ali 400 mg, every other day, or two days on, 2 or more days off. Taking days off actually makes tongkat ali work better. As to tongkat ali 100:1, high doses, such as over 25 mg, may work well, but also cause unpleasant side effects. Dr. Ray Sahelian has formulated a product at 25 mg of 100:1 in order to minimize the tongkat ali side effects.

Q. How quickly does tongkat ali or Euro Plus work?

A. Herbs are not like drugs, they take a few days before working at their best. You can take one capsule Euro Plus in the morning every other day or 3 days a week. We suggest not taking Viagra the same day as Euro Plus. Viagra can be taken on a day when you are not taking Euro Plus and it is better to use a smaller dose of Viagra than you normally do the next day. Euro Plus and many other herbs have a delayed effect into the second and third day after taking a capsule.

Q. Do you have a tongkat ali picture?

Tongkat Ali Research

Effect of Eurycoma longifolia extract on the Glutathione level in Plasmodium falciparum infected erythrocytes in vitro.

Tongkat ali methanol extract was studied on the GSH levels of P. falciparum infected erythrocytes and uninfected erythrocytes. Our study on parasite growth shows the IC50 and IC75 values of tongkat ali to be 0.17 g/ml and 6 g/ml respectively while for BSO was 25.5 g/ml and 46.5 g/ml respectively. About 95% to 100% growth inhibition of P. falciparum infected erythrocyte was observed when treated with tongkat ali and BSO at 16 g/ml and 64 g/ml respectively. The study on GSH contents indicated that non-infected erythrocytes treated with 6 g/ml (IC75 values) of tongkat ali at 24 hours incubation showed less GSH content as compared to non-treated erythrocytes. A similar observation was seen on treated trophozoite infected erythrocyte (10% parasitemia) when treated with 6 g/ml at 3 hours incubation. Analysis of the GSH contents of parasite compartments treated with tongkat ali at the same concentration (6 g/ml) for 3 hours incubation indicated a reduction of GSH contents. At the same concentration, tongkat ali did not affect the GSH contents of enriched trophozoite infected erythrocytes (60-70% parasitemia). Tongkat ali did affect the GSH content of non-infected erythrocyte at 24 hours (accept IC50 value) as well as the parasite compartments (trophozoite infected erythrocyte and parasite itself) but fails to affect the GSH content of enriched trophozoite infected erythrocyte.

Cytotoxic effects of the root extracts of Eurycoma longifolia Jack - Tongkat Ali.

The methanol, n-butanol, chloroform and water extracts obtained from the root of tongkat ali  were assayed using methylene blue assay to evaluate its cytotoxic effect against KB, DU-145, RD, MCF-7, CaOV-3, MDBK cell lines. The results showed that all the tongkat ali root extracts except the water extract of tongkat ali produced significant cytotoxic effect on these cell lines. However, no significant cytotoxic effect was detected on MDBK (kidney) normal cell line. 9-methoxycanthin-6-one, an alkaloid, was detected in each extract with different intensities by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography.
