Tiantan (Temple of Heaven)
Tiantan is situated in a large park about 2 kilometers south of Tian'anmen. It is 270 hectares in total and the main hall, Qiniandian (Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest), is regarded as the symbol of Beijing.

Construction of the temple began during the reign of Emperor Yongle and was completed in 1420. Today, it is regarded as the peak of Ming design. Here, the ceiling of Qiniandian.

The Echo Wall is said to be a perfect whispering gallery. Made of brick and 65 meters in diameter, it was built on the principle that sound waves bounce off a curved wall and can continue to travel down it to the other end. Pictured here are the Circular Altar, the Echo Wall and Qiniandian.
