Beijing Opera
There are about 350 regional styles of opera such as Kunqu Opera, Pingju Opera and Hebei Bangzi. Out of all of the styles, the Beijing Opera
is, by far, the most famous and well loved.
Originally the Beijing Opera was just another form of local theatre, but it has spread all over the country and become the national opera of China. Peking Opera combines stylized acting with song, dance, martial arts, mime and acrobatics. Add to that colorful, elaborately made-up faces and intricate costumes and the whole event becomes a fantastic spectacle.
Most of the plots are based on historical or mythological themes but every once in a while, you'll come across one with a more contemporary story line such as Mao's first wife or the struggle of women to marry as they choose.
