Three Hills
After leaving Guilin by boat, the first thing you
will notice are a trio of hills: Elephant Hill,
Through Hill and Pagoda Hill.
Elephant Hill is a typical of
the Guilin landscape and is situated at the mouth
of the Li and Yang (Yangjiang) Rivers. The opening
between the drinking elephant's trunk and its
foreleg is called the Water Moon Hole.
Across the river is Through
Hill, a name coming from the Moon Cave which runs
through the hill.
A solid Ming Dynasty pagoda
stands on a small hill to the west and has become
known as Pagoda Hill.
Like two mirrors flown from
heaven, the Water Moon Hole floats on the river
while the Moon Cave is embedded high above the
river. They are like two bright shining eyes with
Pagoda Hill sitting in the center like the bridge
of a nose.
The three hills mark the natural
beauty that the Li River has in store.
