History
Guilin's history dates back
over 2,000 years. For insight into the past, there
are prehistoric
and cultural relics of the Zengpi Cave, the Qin
Dynasty hydrotechnic culture of Lingqu Canal, the
Ming Dynasty vassal culture of Jingjiang, the
princes' tombs and mansion, and the magnificent
landscape culture of cliff carvings and landscape
poetry. From the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty,
this city was also the center of politics,
economics, military and was of great importance in
connecting the southern coastline and the central
plains.
In Guilin today, there are 109
historical sites and cultural relics under the
protection of the governments at the state,
provincial and municipal levels. Poems eulogizing
the beauty of Guilin and Buddhist images left over
by scholars and calligraphers of the past can be
found on cliffs and in caves, of which the Guilin
Forest of Steles and the West Hill Cliff Carvings
are the most famous.
