Introduction
The Chinese claim that Guilin has in its
possession the best mountains and waters under
heaven, it may well be true. This is a city rich
with natural beauty, a fascinating history and a
unique, modern lifestyle. It has attracted
thousands of the world's tourists, and has even
played host to the First Family of the United
States.
Located between 109'45' to 104'40' East
Longitude and 24'81' to 25'41' North Latitude, in
the northeastern corner of Guangxi Zhuang
Autonomous Region, the city has been and remains
the center for politics, economics, culture,
science and technology in Northeastern Guangxi. It
is divided into 5 urban districts -- Xiangshan,
Xiufeng, Diecai, Qixing, Yanshan -- and 2 counties
-- Yangshuo and Linggui. The urban area covers 54
square kilometers whilst the total area is 4,195
square kilometers. Its urban population is
560,000, 4.4% of the total, 1,282 million. Guilin
is inhabited by many different people. Major
ethnicities include Zhuang, Hui, Miao, Yao, and
Dong. Minorities comprise about 8.5% of the total
population.
