THE FORTIES: THE ATOMIC DECADE
The Second World War ended when an atomic bomb was dropped by
the United States of America on Nagasaki, Japan, three days after the first
atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The justification for it,, according to
President Truman, was that ‘ ‘ it was necessary to avert a bloody invasion
and save lives...’ ‘ But why two bombs?
Before the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan was already on its knees, the kamikaze desperately throwing themselves over American battleships, and only a little group of fanatics remained refusing to accept the inexorable defeat.
No, the second bomb on Nagasaki wasn´t necessary. Neither was the first. Nevertheless when would the United Styate have another opportunity to test the effects of a new weapon on human being? The experience on Hiroshima was a success. Probably President Truman and his assistants congratulated each other.
The bomb´s destructive efficiency was fully demonstrated. People, animals, trees, schools, cars, stones, simply vanished. No chance to run to a safe place, no chance to protect the head with the hands in a last instictive gesture. Not even a mute scream. And the horror of the survivors with melted skin drawing back their pieces! They were not soldiers. but women, old people, children! No, the second bomb wasn´t necessary. Neither was the first.
The great and clean United Satates of America, which stayed quietly waiting for the first, unexpectedly and disloyal Japanese shot; the defenders of the oppressed people all over the world; the harbinger of liberty and equality, couldn´t ever have practiced an action of such cruelty and inhumanity. Not twice. Because the second bomb was not necessary. Neither was the first.
