| Have you ever really liked a song, but couldn't exactly explain to someone why you actually do? It's one of those songs where all of the lyrics make no sense whatsoever, yet you find yourself singing along with all of the nonsense because the rhythm and beat are so catchy? Or maybe there is that abstract painting that doesn't represent anything you can identify, yet you can't take your eyes off it. That pretty much sums up FLCL- Fooly Cooly. Our story begins with the 12 year old Naota, a boy who's older brother Takkun has left for America to play baseball. His older brother's girlfriend, who happens to be 17 and is a complete psycho, has attached herself to Naota in his absence and insists on calling him Takkun. As these two hang out by a local river, this pink haired girl on a scooter comes flying towards Naota and hits him in the head with a guitar. Soon he starts developing this protruding growth from his forehead, and the pink haired girl decides to move in with Naota and his father and grandfather, posing as a housekeeper. As if the beginning of the story wasn't bizarre enough, by the end of the first episode a massive robot bursts from the top of Naota's head and we watch as the pink haired girl battles it with her bass guitar. After subduing this machine it moves in with Naota and the gang and cleans house, buys porn for Naota's grandfather at the local store and plays baseball for the local team. As the series progresses we see Naota's father obsess over the new guitar wielding housekeeper and work on his underground political newsletter. Numerous creatures will spring from Naota's head, as well as the occasional cat ears. Wild, John Woo inspired gun battles break out, and a secret military agent with larger than life eyebrows will get involved with the whole affair. To say anymore would really ruin the fun and shocking surprise of this show. Do I understand the show? Well, sort of...I think. Was it funny? Hell yeah! This show rips on numerous anime and Hollywood icons so fast it's hard to keep up. Just wait 'till you see the South Park scene. Was this show a lot of fun? You bet it was. Do I recommend it to everyone? Absolutely not. You will either love it or hate it, and I think everyone will have somewhat of a different opinion of what's really going on. Hey, the worst you can do is try watching the first episode and see if you survive. If you dig it, though, get set for one insane ride. |
