Sometime in the near future, a giant explosion takes place in the middle of Tokyo. I know, it sounds like Akira, but that's where the similarities end. To the public it was only known to be an attack by an unknown alien species, which was dubbed Second Impact. Why second you ask? The first impact would be considered the "big bang" theory in which the universe was spawned, which is also the impact spoken of in the bible when Satan was cast down from heaven. The same impact that theoretically destroyed the dinosaurs and launched the earth into the ice age.

A covert military force successfully destroyed the alien, which they dub Adam. Flash forward 15 years, and Tokyo has been rebuilt. The city is more paranoid than before, and they have their own military unit, called Nerv. Nerv has built gigantic robots, called "Evangelions", or "Evas", to prevent any possible third impact from occurring. Not only do the people of Tokyo have their own metal warriors, but all the buildings in the city are able to telescope underground, not only for protection, but also to hide from any alien threat. Many more aliens attack the city, and a group of 3 children, all born after second impact, pilot the Evas and defend the city.

At first glance, it's your typical Mech Anime, with some great characters and storyline. If that was the entire plot, this series would still be great, but it doesn't stop there. Later in the series, it's revealed that the Eva units are actually genetic clones of the first Angel, Adam. They are living creatures with metal armor, making them look like robots. Also, we find out that there is more to the story of Second Impact. What is not known to the public, is that the explosion, which destroys most of Tokyo, submerging the rest underwater, is caused by an alien, called an Angel (in the bible, Satan was also an angel). However, it was an angel sent by god, to destroy the world, as prophesized in the Book of Revelations. Mankind was meant to be destroyed by the hand of god, but man refused to die.
