Baby's Breath

BABY'S BREATH

By the light of the moon,
it's so quiet and peaceful
and I look at you.
I watch you sleep-
My perfect little rose.
I lay my head softly
across your tiny chest.
I hear your heartbeat,
and feel your breath.
I place my finger in your hand,
you close your fingers
around mine.
I gently move away
a wisp of hair so fine.
Your skin is so smooth
beneath my hands so rough.
I smile, amazed as your toes
spread with my touch,
then curl tight and relax again.
I place my ear
to your slightly open mouth.
I listen as your little breath
comes in and goes out.
With the tip of my nose
I touch yours,
and I inhale the sweet beauty
of your baby breath-
and remember
when I breathed for you,
as you became
my rose inside my womb.
Quietly I move away
to let you dream.
I turn to go
and pause-
I thank the Lord
for my life made whole,
and for a love I will carry
even after my death.
I thank him
for such a perfect rose,
and for your tiny
baby breath.
