| US History 2010 Syllabus --- Page 2 go to page 3 Method of Evaluation: Three one-hour exams will be given. Each exam will consist of identification, short answer and essay questions drawn from class discussions and the text. Students are expected to be familiar with the factual material and interpret and explain the material in its historical contexts. No make up exams are given except in the most unusual of circumstances. Students who miss an exam must contact the instructor within 24 hours and have a legitimate excuse with appropriate documentation (hospital records, legal documents, etc.) to warrant consideration for a make up exam. Failure to follow this procedure will result in the denial of a make up exam being given and a "0" being awarded as the exam grade. Grades will also be given for quizzes and outside projects. There will be a total of 500 points for the course. The grading system will be: Three exams: 100 points each (60% of course grade) Research Project: 100 points (20% of course grade) Research Paper outline: 50 points (10% of course grade) Quizzes: 40 points maximum (8% of course grade) (Approximately eight such quizzes will be offered randomly during the semester. If the student is absent on the day of the quiz, the missed work cannot be 'made up,' regardless of the circumstances. This includes, but is not limited to, university business, health emergencies, work commitments or the like.) Grading Scale: A 450-500 points (90% or better) B 400-449 points (80 - 89%) C 350-399 points (70 - 79%) D 300-349 points (60 - 69%) F 299 or fewer points (59% or less) (Note: The instructor does not use the +/- system or give grades of "I" [incomplete] when calculating final grades for the course. Further, she does not offer extra credit assignments or makeup unannounced -- or "pop" -- quizzes, so don't ask.) Deadlines and Exam Schedule: Unit 1: Chapters 1-5. Exam date: Sept. 26 Unit 2: Chapters 6-10. Exam date: Oct. 24 Term Paper Due: Nov. 21 (Note: One letter grade *per calendar day* is deducted for each day late, including weekends and holidays. No exceptions.) Unit 3: Chapters 11-16. Final exam. Dec. 12 Attendance: Any student who misses the equivalent of two weeks of class (four total absences for the term) will receive an "F" for the course. The grade may be reduced from the first day of class to the last day of class. Students who are disruptive, sleeping, or otherwise distracting other students or the instructor will be asked to leave, with the ejected student being counted absent for the day and receiving a "0" for the day's work. Habitual Tardiness Any student arriving after class has started and/or roll has been taken will be counted absent for that class. Late students are a distraction from the educational proecess, a display of bad manners and a lack of respect for the instuctor and fellow students. Latecomers on the day of exams will not be allowed to enter and will in turn earn a "0." Plagiarism and Cheating Policy The instructor will not tolerate plagiarism in any form. A grade of "0" will be given for the project or exam, as well as an "F" for the course. Further, she will use every resource available through the University to have the student expelled from school, have the incident noted on the student's permanent academic record, and rescind any/all merit-based financial aid. In order to complete this course, all students are required to read this detailed plagiarism policy, and follow the instsructions given therein. Further, all students are required to enroll at www.turnitin.com using the course ID # 1936043 with the password: history before any of their assignments will be graded or returned. go to page 3 |
