Jeez. It's hot in here. You'd think the damn company would spring for a bit of air. I mean, with what they're paying me they must be sitting on a gold mine.
I close my eyes and remind myself that working here allows me to go to school so that someday I won't have to...well, I won't have to work here. It is still with a sigh of regret that I close my drawer and flip on my light.
Welcome to aisle 10 at the local Big K.
Within seconds of my light being on people scurry towards me, and I put on my happy face.
"Hello," I begin, "how are you today, ma'am?"
xxxxxxxx
Two hours later I am tired and worn out. I'm ready to scream at the woman in front of me. She has a coupon, which is lovely, really it is, but she doesn't seem to understand that it expired two months ago.
Trust me on this one: the customer is not always right.
Finally, finally, the woman realizes here mistake and leaves. I breathe a sigh of relief. I greet the next customer, when I notice someone new in my line. Damn it! I was hoping to make a run for my break...
I look at this new person and almost gasp. Goodness, he's gorgeous. I begin to check the lady in front of him out even faster, hoping he won't leave my line...please, I pray, please...
"Wait," the lady in front of me demands, "that price isn't right." I look at her blankly for a second, and then down to the bag of chips in my hand.
"They rang up $1.49. They're supposed to be $.099."
No! I want to scream. No! No! No! No! No!
I don't want to go on a price check...no!
"Never mind. I'll get them at Kroger."
Thank you.
I finish her sale and she leaves to the sound of my "Thank you for shopping at Big K."
Now. On to him. Squeals of delight threaten to erupt from me. 'Keep it cool' I think, 'keep it cool.'
"Hello, sir. How are you today?" He smiles and I swear my heart stops.
"Good. You?" Oh, my. What a voice!
"I'm pretty well, thank you." I look down at the items he has, toothpaste and a bag of sunflower seeds. I scan and bag them.
"That'll be $5.01, sir."
I watch with interest as he pulls his wallet from his back pocket and opens it. A look of confusion sweeps across his face momentarily, and then he gives a small smile.
"I've been robbed."
Damn, he must have a wife.
I grin, its not like he would've noticed me anyway, and this is definitely the most fun I've had all day.
He pushes his credit card through the machine and I go to work, calling up receipts. I ask him, while working, "Do you know who robbed you?"
He grins directly at me. Oh, she's a lucky lady.
"Yeah. 5'2, petite, beautiful redhead..."
I hand him his credit slip and he signs. Fox Mulder. His mother knew what she was doing.
"Are you going to press charges?"
"Nah," he smiles "I think I'll just spank her." I laugh and hand him the slip and the bag. He winks at me. "Have a good day."
I watch him walk away, mesmerized by his strong gait. I continue to stare into space long after he has left, completely missing my break. A voice tugs into my daydreams.
"Are you open?" I turn to look at a middle-aged woman with three screaming children.
I nod. "For two more hours."
end
Author's notes: Don't get me wrong, I love my customers! I honestly have a wonderful time talking to them and making new friends. But, this fic is true (except one *minor* thing, ;-), and that day was horrible! I was ready to yell at every customer, until the guy who is the inspiration for Mulder came through. He was a riot! Thanks for reading my drivel, I hope I at least put a smile on your face. Now, if only Mulder would come into Kmart...
