Biographical Information
I attended a liberal arts college in rural Lamoni, Iowa, Graceland College, after graduation from Eastern High. I received my Bachelor of Science
degree with a major in Elementary Education. I finished in January of 1965
and taught Kindergarten at Allen Street School in Lansing for one semester.
The day after school finished I married Dale Volz and we have lived in
Minden City at the same address ever since. The first year in Minden City
[a small town in the Thumb of Michigan about 9 miles west of Lake Huron] I
taught in the local elementary school, grades 1 through 4 -- only 20
students. Then I retired :>) and raised our family and worked on the
farm. We had a Dairy and crop farm with about 50 cows, raised all the off
spring -- heifers and steers and also raised wheat, navy beans to sell and
corn, hay, oats to feed the cattle. We are now semi-retired having sold
the dairy cows, but continue to raise dairy heifers.
I also became very active in our church, had girl scout troops for 10
years, and was on Sanilac County Farm Bureau committees. I've written
newsletters, organized events for Farm Bureau, worked at County Fairs. Our
children have been in scouts [our oldest son is an Eagle Scout], Future
Farmers of America. Sheila attended Michigan State in Veterinary
Technician program and Dan took the Dairy Short Course. Sheila is married
with 6 children, lives in St. Johns north of Lansing, homeschools her
children and is a very busymom! Dan is married with 3 children. He has
been farming with us since college, but is moving to Montana this summer,
2002. He has been on the Michigan Farm Bureau State Young Farmer committee
for several years.
Our youngest son, Todd, is graduating from Graceland College in May with a
Bachelor's degree in Computer Technology. He has lived and breathed
computers since elementary school.
Today I'm doing some substitute teaching, only in grades K - 4. I've
started a new hobby of quiltmaking, doing photo albums with my
daughter-in-law and enjoy using the computer. We really enjoy our 9
grandchildren, traveling and camping in our 5th wheel.
