Title: Fires of Deceit Author: Black Raven (Sarah) Rating: PG 13 Feedback: This is my first fan fiction story so yeah. Also, you’ll soon learn that I like to use cliffhangers. Chapter 1 Emily sat on a cold, grey rock, her hand by her sword if anything threatened to come to the camp and kill the prince. Fog started to rise, and with it brought up Emily’s disgust. The fog shouldn’t be rising this quickly! She thought to herself. Five sneezes hit her, one after another. It was then that she realized that the cause of the fog was magic. She wondered if she should get help. The rock striking the back of her head, sending blood down her neck, settled the question for her. She fought the darkness that tried to get a hold of her. The ground came up to her face and she could feel magic gathering above her. She finally managed to turn her head to see who had caught her. Before her stood a Dwarf and a man and she would have had her sword in one of their chests by now if only they hadn’t tied her hands. She had also had her feet and mouth tied too. She couldn’t hold on to the light anymore, and she let the cold, chilling darkness swallow up her numb body, let the darkness creep into her mind, and she wondered if it would be her last breath. ~ Sunlight strained through Emily’s eyes, and her mind quickly ran through everything that had happened just a few hours ago. Her head felt like a lead weight and she let her head fall back against the tree. She felt a little bit better now and she was pretty sure that now she could get the bindings off. She brought her legs through her arms so that her hands were now in front of her. With bound hands, she released her feet and mouth of the ties and then tore of the ties around her hands with her teeth. She quietly grabbed her sword, which was six feet away from her and attached it to her belt. She unsheathed her sword and took inventory of her surroundings. There were four hobbits, the Dwarf and man who had captured her, and two other men, asleep around a pit that had obviously been an area for a fire. She turned around to the stream and saw an elf kneeling by the water. Legolas sensed something nearby but he couldn’t hear anything, so he guessed that it was just a mouse or something. However, when the metal of a sword came down on his neck, his own faint trail of blood rolling down the blade, he found that he had been wrong, extremely wrong. “Who are you and what do you want with me?” questioned Emily, anger making her voice terse and clipped. Legolas didn’t move, instead he found an opening. Risking a cut up hand, he grabbed the flat of the sword and swung his attacker from behind him to where he could see her. Legolas stared in disbelief at Emily. He quickly drew on of his knives and held it above her, ready to lunge if needed. “Who are you?” demanded Emily, not getting anything close to a good look at her attacker due to the sun in her eyes. “Legolas.” He looked at her from another angle. “And you are…” “Emily. Now if you don’t mind, Legolas, please remove your sword from that position.” “I would,” he started, “if I could be sure that you wouldn’t attack me. Until then, I guess it stays pointed at you.” Emily glared at him, her anger apparent upon her face. She would have been happy to go back to camp without complaint. When they asked her where she had been, she would have said that she fell down a hill and was knocked unconscious. However, it didn’t look like this would be happening. In one quick motion, Emily kicked the knife out of Legolas’s hand. He let the knife go and concentrated on Emily. He grabbed her arms behind her back with one hand and latched the other arm across her neck. Emily couldn’t move. Emily decided to stop struggling because she could see that nothing was going to work. Legolas realized this, and commented “If you don’t attack or run away, I will let go of you.” When he got no response from her, he let her go. Emily turned around and found a tall elf with blonde hair that ran below his shoulders. Wondrous blue eyes and a fair face. Legolas realized that she was staring at him, and a slight grin crossed his face. Emily turned a dull red and questioned, “Why exactly am I here?” A troubled look came over Legolas’s face. “I don’t exactly know who you are, except the fact that your name is Emily.” “The Dwarf and the man in black, I think I heard his name to be Aragorn, they knocked me out and when I awoke I was here. Legolas looked over his shoulder at his companions who were waking. He grabbed Emily’s wrist and dragged her into the bush. He pressed his hand against her back to keep her as close to the ground as possible. The two of them watched through the leaves. “Where is Legolas?” questioned Gandalf “Probably scouting out the land.” Commented Borimir. Everyone left to wash up at the river except for Aragorn and Gimli, who stayed behind. “Where is that blasted girl?” snapped Gimli. “I don’t know.” Replied Aragorn, “All I know is that we have to kill her soon.” Legolas could feel Emily tremble. His eyes met with hers. “What did I do?” she questioned, her voiced cracked with fear. “I don’t know.” Legolas replied. “I do know that you have to get out of here, and I will help you all I can.” Chatper 2 Emily felt fear grip her entire body, she felt as if she were falling into nothingness. Pain struck her, and she felt herself tremble. Legolas could feel her shaking under his grip, and confusion swept over him. What did they want with her? She must have been 17, maybe 18. How could she be dangerous? He remembered the sword she had held up against his neck. Maybe she wasn’t harmless but still, why did the want to kill her? He quietly whispered in her ear, “Come on, we have to leave now.” They quietly yet swiftly moved through the bush, trying to get away from the camp. Once they were about 100 feet away did they dare to stop for a breath. Emily sat on a sun warmed rock. She let the sun warm her up and pulled her knees to her chest. Legolas sat beside her. He moved her strands of hair from her face that blocked her eyes. She shivered when he touched her, and he quickly brought his hand away. “Where were you taken from?” Legolas finally dared to say after a few minutes of silence. Emily stared at a puddle of water and then finally answered “From the camp of the knights of Derall. I was on guard, the prince was there and there are a lot of people out to kill him. I’ve just become a knight, and I feel as if I’ve failed.” There was another long silence between the two. Finally Emily spoke. “Go back to your company. They’re after me, not you. You shouldn’t have to be dragged into this.” “Why’s that?” his soft voice questioned. Emily didn’t reply. “I want to be involved.” Legolas started, “I feel responsible now, I’m not going to let you get killed.” “I can take care of myself!” Legolas smiled. “I really don’t doubt that, especially after you held the sword to my neck ready to kill me.” Emily turned a dull red. She was lucky that he hadn’t killed her after. She should have known better than to attack an elf. A sudden hurt tugged at her heart and she brought her hand down to her knees. “Everything will work out.” He started, “I know you can look after yourself, but I need to know that you’ll be okay. I can’t let you go when death is looking for you.” Legolas touched her chin, about to turn her head so she would look at him. As soon as he touched her, she dodged away. “Are you afraid of me?” Legolas questioned. “I just don’t want to fall in love again. I’m the only woman knight, which meant I was surrounded by all men. I loved the Prince, and I thought he loved me. He wanted me to marry him and become queen, but I want to see the world and be free to roam about as I please. He didn’t like my answer, we got into a fight. He won’t even look at me now. I don’t want to be hurt like that again.” “I would never hurt you.” Legolas’s voice was soft. “If I were to say that I loved you, I would be saying it from my heart.” Emily looked over at him and smiled. “Where are we to go?” “What might they be after?” Emily’s hand slowly slid to her neck and she pulled on the chain that revealed a crystal that glowed an almost olive green. Emily looked back up at him. Legolas could feel immense power coming from it. Emily undid the chain and took it off from around her neck. She held it in her hand and moved it towards Legolas. When she realized that he wasn’t going to touch it, she took his hand and placed it upon the crystal. Legolas could feel the unknown magic in it. Emily finally took the crystal and clasped the chain back around her neck. “The goddess of magic gave it to me.” Her voice seemed stronger, as if knowing that it was from the goddess of magic gave her strength. “I guess we’ll have to find her and give it to her.” Legolas commented, his eyes meeting with Emily’s. She shook her head in agreement. “The goddess can be found in the magic hall in the castle. The castle is located in Lineri, the capitol of Derall. The problem is that it’s a three day journey.” “Then I guess we’ll have to start now.” Legolas inquired. He gave Emily his hand to help her up, and she took it. “We’ll make it, I know we can.” Legolas placed his hand on her cheek and kissed her gently upon her lips. Emily remembered how she felt when the prince kissed her, and she realized that she liked it better when Legolas kissed her. She looked up at him. We will make it! She told herself. And if we don’t, I’ll die trying with the one I love.
