#1. FOUR DEAD IN OHIO (1970):

(description): This is from a book about the Kent State Shootings at Kent University in Ohio. Four students were killed in the shootings, which took place at a protest. The large bold print grabs your attention: FOUR DEAD IN OHIO. Not "protest kills 4 people," or "students killed by guards," just "FOUR DEAD IN OHIO."

(reason) (? I think umm we're supposed to have a seperate paper with the reasons, so don't put this on the power point..): I chose this picture because it shows the outrage felt by Americans caused by the death of the four students in Ohio. The caption shows that it didn't matter WHO they were - just that they were killed. It shows sympathy without showing a dead body, and instead it just shows the anger that was felt by the public because of the shootings.

#2: Walt disney world (1971):

(description) In 1971, Walt Disney World opened in Florida. Walt Disney World has been a place of FAMILY MAGIC AND FUN for years, and the whole Disney Corporation is a big part of American culture.

(reason) The entire "it's a place to be a child," (and a child = innocent) seems like it would be leftover from the 1960s. In any case, in the 70s and onward, Walt Disney World became a huge part of Americans life -- whether they actually ever went to the park, everyone knows what it is and probably some of the more famous attractions.

#5 - Apollo 17 (1972)

(description) Apollo 17 was the last manned mission to the moon. (There were others planned after Apollo 17, but they were cancelled.) It was launched December 7, 1972. This picture is of one of the crew standing on the moon.

(reason) I picked the picture of a crewemember of Apollo 17 on the moon because it was the last manned mission to the moon. And because I think it was an important event in American history because even though it was the last moon Apollo mission, it was still the beginning of America's space program.

#4: first American POWs in Vietnam released (1973):

(description) In 1973 the first American Pows were released in Vietnam. It was part of the start of America pulling out of the Vietnam war. More POWs would be released in the following years. This is a picture of a released POW with a loved one upon his return.

(reason)In the 70s, America decided to start pulling out of Vietnam. When the cease-fire agreement was made, then the first POWs were released in the '73, and they were greeted by their families upon their return home. I thought this picture was important because it captured the moment of relief and hope of the former POW reuniting with a loved one.

#3: People Magazine (1974):

(description) The first issue of PEOPLE magazine was published on February 27th, 1974. PEOPLE magazine often features celebrity and pop culture news, and is a favorite among people who are interested in those topics. People showcased America's growing fascination with celebrity in the 1970s. The first issue featured Mia Farrow on the cover.

(reason) People was featuring celebrities and popular culture topics - something that people were more fascinated by in the 1970s. The culture at the time was becoming more celebrity obsessed, which (while it existed in previous cultures) was becoming much more a national thing.
