Here is a list of questions and answers, taken from many frequently asked questions in the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom!
Who is 'Yalik?'
- Yalik is the official Japanese name of the evil side of Malik. This name is not used in the American dub, but is present in the original Japanese anime. Some fans have taken the liberty of calling him "Yami Malik," but this is NOT the correct way of addressing him. His official name, from the Japanese anime, manga, and guide books is Yalik. Let me point out that calling him "Yami Malik" is a common mistake among many Yu-Gi-Oh fans.
What is that you're saying about HONDA having a YAMI??
- A shock, I know. Hikari Honda (Tristan in the dub) had a yami in the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh. The first season was never dubbed in America, and it is a little known fact that Honda's yami was cut out of the second season. His yami took the form of a teenage girl, and they even had a blossoming romance! It is believed that the producers had planned for Honda and his yami to join as one -- something unheard of between yami and hikari! (see next question)
Do the yami sides and hikari sides have seperate bodies, or what?
- While it is believed by the majority of the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom, the yami sides and hikari sides CAN have seperate bodies. This was observed in the anime when Yalik and Malik seperated, and Malik helped Yami Bakura battle against Yalik. (This fact was obscured in the American dub, where they used graphic editors to gloss over the lines in Malik's body, making it seem as if he was a "ghost" or "spirit.") The reason that the yami sides and hikari sides don't seperate is, as we believe here, it helps the yami sides keep their energy up. The choice of whether or not to seperate is up to the yami side -- which is why Hikari Ryou can't get rid of Yami Bakura of his own free will.
(Side note: Yami Bakura seperates from Hikari Ryou in several occasions, and takes advantage of this time to abuse and beat Ryou. Ryou was suspended from his school for being found with slash marks on his wrists, but it is not clear whether or not it was Ryou or Bakura who made the slashes.
Is his name Ryou or Bakura??
- Ryou is the official name of the hikari side, and Bakura is the official name of the yami side. ('hikari' and 'yami' excluded)
!! But they call him "Bakura" at school, even in the original Japanese version !!
- True, but that is because they are talking to the yami side. Hikari Yugi and his friends do not normally converse with Hikari Ryou. Hikari Ryou is the equivalent of a "goth" in America, and he often defies school rules by smoking in the bathrooms and wearing black make-up to his classes.
