No Gi X-Guard to Back (Pt.1) |

Taking your opponent's back from the X-guard can be very challenging in a no-gi situation, as he is able to spin away much more easily. I have broken this down into two parts...because I am only allowed to load 8 pictures at a time. :) Enjoy. |

Here we start out in basic X-guard position. |

Let's go through the normal method for taking the back first, so this No-gi method makes sense. Normally, the left arm swims underneath the opponent's leg... |

...clearing the leg over your head, and allowing you free access to his back. With the gi, you can often grab his belt or pants to drag his weight back on top of you, or to allow time for you to control his ankles and trip him forward. Without that belt or pants to grab (depending on the rules of the competition), it can be very hard to control the opponent at this point, as the opponent is often able to spin free or run forward before you are able to secure his ankles. |

And you end up with nothing, as he sprints forward from your X-guard, or spins to face you. |

But all is not lost! Let's start back in the basic X-guard position again. I am controlling his knee with my right hand, with his left shin trapped between my right shoulder and my neck. My left hands comes into the equation... |
