The Halter horse...
You must spend time working on muscle tone with your halter Quarter Horse for 15 to 30 minutes a day. The amount of time spent on your halter Quarter Horse depends on the age of your horse. If your horse is sweating and breathing heavy during and after training time then you are pushing too hard. Reduce the workout time allowing time for walk ups, jog and lops and back down to walk outs. Serious injury can happen from fatigue. A tip for halter Quarter Horses is to keep him out of the sun. Turn him out at night only or cover him with a summer sheet. Halter horses can not be washed out by the sun. Bath the halter Quarter horse. Bathing removes dirt and stains and releases natural oils into the coat to keep him shiney. Train your horse to accept his mane being pulled and clippers. A halter horse must be well accustomed to clippers on over his body. Appearance is everything in the ring. Keep your horses feet trimmed by someone who understands show trims for a correct Quarter Horse foot. Another tip for showing halter Quarter horses is to always use clean polished tack. Used halters can be purchased in tack shops or on this site. Use something dressy. Your Quarter horse will need to lead at your shoulder and in a straight line. Your QH must turn on his hind end in a 180 turn to the right not from his front end. Take the time to teach your QH to stand square. Always set his back feet first and then his front. Reward the horse when he does it right. Be well dressed yourself and respectful that you are in a show ring being judged.
