About the
Legends of Cooperstown
The Legends of Cooperstown Strat-O-Matic Baseball League was founded in August, 2001 with league play to set to begin in November, 2001 and run through March, 2002. Subsequent seasons will be played in a winter league format of  November through March as well.
The brainchild of Larry Denicola, the Hall of Fame set based league features 16 teams and 6 others on the league waiting list. To supplement the 197 card Hall of Fame set, 24 Negro Leaguers have been added, including the 18 that are members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. In addition, a past season set will be used each season, giving a variety to the league that will not allow the Hall of Fame set to become stale or repetitive. The inaugural season will see the the 1967 card set in use, with future seasons to be voted upon each year by the league membership. Also, league specific Hall of Fame inductions, to correspond with the summer ceremonies in Cooperstown, will add to the pool of available players.
The enthusiasm of the league owners has been unprecedented, with the emphasis on fun, fair play, nostalgia, and friendly competition. The league website will feature considerable member involvement and near daily updating, along with a reference and link section that will allow league members and visitors to the site an opportunity to experience and learn about Baseball's past. Much of our nation's past can be said to have been molded or at least affected by what transpires in the sport and it is appropriate and proper to learn as much as we can about Baseball history. We as a nation have shaped the sport of Baseball, and we in turn have been shaped by it.
On September 11, 2001 our great nation was struck with a tragedy perhaps unlike no other in our history. When the World Trade Center was destroyed, the Pentagon badly damaged, and 4 airliners highjacked to commit those crimes, all of America was affected. As we struggle to come to terms with the loss of life, family, and security, we struggle to come to terms with why that horrific act was committed.
It has given our entire nation and perhaps the world an opportunity to come together, realize who we are and what we're all about, and perhaps make America and the world a better place, not just for ourselves but for future generations. The acts of heroism and compassion that have come from these events have given us hope that we can get through this and accomplish that task.
It has also shown us who our real heroes are. Sports and recreation are much needed diversions, and the people who excel at them are indeed heroes in their own right, but they are just that...diversions...and they should not be taken as seriously as our commitments to our families and our nation. Each and every one of us has the potential to be a hero if we are called to be one...and it need not be as dramatic as we have seen on televison coverage of the events of September 11th. By being true to yourself and your family, by keeping things in perspective, and being willing to do what is right, one can be ready and able to be a hero if we are needed to be one...indeed to many, especially your own children...you already are one...
