April
19, 2002 Homestead (AP): In what has to be a first in baseball history, two
pitchers threw no
hitters
in the same game. Homestead's Smokey Joe Williams matched up against Boston's
Eddie Plank
in
what turned into a gem of a game. Both pitchers were on top of their game,
surrendering few base
runners.
The hometown Grey's won the game in the bottom of the 9th, when consecutive
errors by
Waner
and Gehringer allowed the Greys to score with 2 outs!
The
44,000+ fans at the park knew they were seeing something special in the 6th,
when both pitchers
set
the opposition down in order, and barely looked to break a sweat. Eddie Plank
after the game said
"Wow.
I throw a no hitter and lose. Wow. I'm still stunned." Chuck Klein, who
scored the winning run
said
"Unbelievable. Amazing is what it was. We were lucky, and that's
that."
