The
Spiders continue to manage to win on the road, and in extras, going
6-3 on this
road trip. Included in the 6 wins, were two extra inning
wins over
Mountain Top, notably another 21 inning marathon, which was
preceded by
a 16 inning game. Series summaries as follows:
Cleveland at
Kentucky:
Game 1: Yet
another 15 inning win for the Spiders. Cleveland won the
game after Mules
Suttles put a runner on in the top of the 15th. Arrigo
the win, Covaleski
the save, and Boswell with a very tough loss.
Game2: Kentcuky's
10th inning loss went to McDonald, who gave up 2 runs
in the top of the
10th to the Spiders, enroute to their 4-3 win. Stan
Covaleski nearly
blew the save by giving up a run in the bottom of the
10th, but held on.
Game 3: Goslin, Foxx,
and Klein all homered to lead the Eclipse to a 9-2
win. sam
McDowell took the loss, striking out 11 in 7 innings of work.
Short garnered his
10th win of the season.
Cleveland at
Virginia:
Game 1:
Sutton beat Koufax 8-3. The Spiders scored 4 runs in the 9th to
put away the
Generals, despite a HR from Greenberg and 2 RBi from Aaron.
Game 2: Virginia
pounds Bob Feller and the Spiders for 12 runs and 17
hits in their rout.
Mel Ott went 3-5 with a home run and 4 Rbis to lead
the Generals.
Game 3: Bob Lemon
went the distance in an 8-3 win over the Generals.
Brooks Robinson's
3-5 performance lead the way for the Spiders, despite 7
walks from Lemon.
Cleveland at
Mountain Top;
Game 1: Ortega
shuts out the Spiders 8-0, roughing up Don Sutton along
the way. Hack
Wilson had 2 home runs and 4 RBI in Ortega's 2 hitter.
Game 2: In another
extra inning pitching duel, starter Bob Feller went 9
strong, and Leon
Day 9 1/3 strong innings with out getting a decision.
Cleveland got 3
hits and 2 runs off reliever Roy Face in the top of the
16th for the Win.
Gerry Arrigo got his 7th win, and Covaleski his 11th
save.
Game 3: In another
mararthon game lasting 21 innings, and 8hrs 35min,
Cleveland prevailed
late 14-13 over the Wallbangers. Scoring was often
to be had, with the
score tied at 12 after 9. Cleveland went up 13-12 in
the 14th, but
Covaleski blew the save by giving up a run in the bottom of
the inning.
Covaleski ended up pitching 8 innings in relief for the win.
Mountaintop used 9
pitchers in the loss, and included 2 blown saves.
