The Spiders and Senators wrangled in a tough 4 game series at Griffith
Stadium.  The Senators took the first two games of the series, winning
game 1 6-4 (W:Spahn, L:Wynn), and Game 2 10-3 (W:Drysdale, L:McDowell).
Game 3 was taken by the Spiders behind Don Sutton's 3rd shut out of the
year, leaving tough luck pitcher Luis Tiant to take the 2-0 loss.  Game 4
was one for the record books, as it took 6 hours and 56 minutes, in 25
inings for the Spiders to top the Senators 4-2.  Cleveland scored first
in the top of the 4th, as starter Bob Feller doubled home Brooks Robinson
and Enos Slaughter.  Washington responded in the bottom of the 7th when
Fleetwood Walker hit a 2 run HR to tie the game.  Feller, lifted for a
pinch hitter in the 10th, went 9 strong innings.  Walter Johnson pitched
11 6 hit innings for Washington before being lifted for a pinch hitter.
Both teams had their chances in the extra frames.  Washington loaded the
bases up three times in extras, but failed to score.  Cleveland had a
runner at 3rd with 1 out twice and failed to score.  In the top of the
25th, with 2 outs, Willie McCovey drew a walk, and the Carl Yastrezemski
hit one over the RF wall, putting the Spiders up 4-2.  Stan Covaleski
came on to pitch the bottom of the 25th, sending the Senators down in
order for his 5th save.  Minnie Rojas picked up the win by pitching the
previous 1.2 innings.  Tommie Sisk, brought on in the 24th, took the loss
for the Senators.  The game also only featured 4 extra base hits, doubles
by Max Carey (CLE), and Maury Wills (WAS), and the two HR's by Yaz and
Walker.  Also of note, Lou Brock was thrown out twice trying to steal by
Randy Hundley.
