Series #16 Recap – Live Oaks vs. Americans

Game #1: LiveOaks win 7 – 6

Billy Williams hit a 9th inning two-run homerun off of Moe Drabowsky to complete a remarkable Rochester comeback.  The Oaks scored six runs over the final three innings to prevail over Boston’s 16 hit attack.  Billy Herman was 3 for 4 with a walk, homer, two runs, and knocked in two.  Bobby Doerr was 3 for 5 with two doubles.  Babe Ruth swatted a two-run homer.

Game #2: LiveOaks win 3 – 1

Al Simmons knocked in all of Rochester’s runs with a 1st inning sacrifice fly and an 8th inning two-run homer.  The Americans could only manage a pinch-hit homerun by Monte Irvin.  Babe Ruth was 2 for 4.  Billy Williams was 2 for 4.  Tim Keefe pitched a strong game (8 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 SO, 1 ER).

Game #3: LiveOaks win 2 – 1

For the third straight game, Rochester scored a 1st inning run, but then had to break a tied game to earn the win.  Billy Williams continued his red-hot hitting by knocking a solo dinger in the 4th to complete the scoring.  Williams was 2 for 3 on the day.  George Kell was 2 for 3 for Boston.  Juan Marichal went the distance for the win (9 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 6 SO, 1 ER).

Game #4: LveOaks win 7 – 2

The Live Oaks scored three unearned runs in the 3rd inning for an early start on the way to the series sweep.  The first three hitters in the Rochester order, Ross Youngs, Billy Herman, and Bill Terry, each had three hits and scored two runs.  Jim Kaat pitched three solid innings of relief, allowing only a solo homerun to Ken McMullen.  Billy Williams finished his torrid series with a double and two RBI.

Series #17 Recap – Eagles vs. Americans

Game #1: Eagles win 3 – 2

George Scott was 2 for 4 with a 6th inning solo homerun that turned out to be the game winner for Newark.  Rich Nye gave a solid performance (8 IP, 8 H, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 ER).  Nye was helped by three double-plays, two of which were hit by Ed Delahanty.  Tommy Helms was 3 for 4 for Boston.

Game #2: Eagles win 5 – 1

This time it was Vic Willis who stymied the Americans.  Willis went the distance, allowing only six hits (9 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 3 SO, 1 ER).  Joe DiMaggio was 3 for 5 with two runs scored.  Roy Campanella was 1 for 2 with two walks.  His 9th inning single drove in two runs to put the game out of reach.  Oscar Charleston was 2 for 3 for Boston.

Game #3: Eagles win 3 – 2

The Americans had ten hits against Newark starter Ray Culp but could not string them into runs.  On the other side, Boston starter Lefty Gomez threw a no-hitter through 6 innings, but then allowed three straight hits producing two runs in the 7th.  Al Kaline, who was 2 for 3 with a walk, led off the key 7th with a single.  Bobby Doerr was 3 for 4 with a homer.  Babe Ruth was 2 for 4.

Game #4: Americans win 6 – 3

Babe Ruth smashed two homeruns to drive in five runs in the Americans’ win.  Oscar Charleston hit a tape-measure blast in the 1st to go back-to-back with the Babe.  Charleston was 2 for 3, as was Boston catcher Gabby Hartnett.  Roy Campanella hit a two-run dinger for Newark.  Hoss Radbourn went the whole way for Boston (9 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 6 SO, 2 ER).

Series #18 Recap – Senators vs. Americans

Game #1: Senators win 6 – 5

The recent woes of Boston’s bullpen continued today as the Senators struck for two ninth inning runs to top the Americans.  The bottom of Washington’s order did the damage as Fleetwood Walker and Maury Wills were 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and John Ward was 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.  Willie Stargell slugged a bases-loaded, bases-clearing, double in the 4th.  Sam Rice was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.

Game #2: Senators win 3 – 1

Lou Brock and John Ward were each 3 for 3 to pace Washington’s winning attack.  Brock hit a screaming line-drive homer in the 3rd with Ward aboard to give the Senators a lead they would not relinquish.  Warren Spahn went the distance for Washington (9 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 SO, 1 ER).  Boston’s lone run came on a homer by Oscar Charleston.  Paul Casanova three out three would-be Washington base-stealers.

Game #3: Americans win 4 – 1

Boston scored all the runs they needed on two two-run homers by Babe Ruth and Willie Stargell.  Dazzy Vance delivered a strong outing (9 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 5 SO, I ER) for the Americans.  Maury Wills was 2 for 4 and knocked in Washington’s only run.  Sam Rice was 2 for 4 for Boston.

Game #4: Americans win 3 – 2

George Kell singled home Bobby Wallace with two outs in the 9th inning to give the Americans the win.  Joe Morgan had a hit and drew three walks, one of which knocked in the first Senators’ run.  John Ward and Fleetwood Walker were each 2 for 4.  Washington stranded twelve base runners.
