Series #12 Recap – Americans vs. RiverBats

Game #1: Americans win 9 – 6  in 11 innings

A triple in the 11th by Ed Delahanty led to the winning run for Boston.  Delahanty scored on a wild pitch to the next batter and Oscar Charleston followed later in the inning with a two-run homerun.  Missouri tied the game at six in the bottom of the 8th using four straight hits scoring three runs, capped off by Sam Thompson’s (2 for 5, 2 RBI) triple.  Babe Ruth was 2 for 3 with 3 runs, 2 RBI, and a solo homerun.  Honus Wagner was 2 for 5 with a solo shot.

Game #2: RiverBats win 3 – 0

Bullet Joe Rogan lived up to his name by striking out eight Americans on the way to a shutout win.  Rogan (8 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 8 SO, 0 ER) got help from Tony Pierce in the 9th.  Dan Brouthers was 3 for 3.  Honus Wagner and Biz Mackey were each 2 for 3.

Game #3: RiverBats win 6 – 3

Ty Cobb went 3 for 4 with 2 triples, a double, and 4 RBI to lead Missouri.  All of the American’s scoring came on a three-run bomb by Pops Stargell.  Other than that lapse, John Clarkson brought his best stuff to earn the complete game win (9 IP, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 SO, 3 ER).

Game #4: RiverBats win 9 – 6

In an unbelievable comeback, the Missouri River Bats scored eight 9th inning runs to defeat Boston.  Jackie Robinson completed the scoring with a two-out three-run homer.  All of Boston’s runs were delivered by Roger Conner, who was 3 for 5 with two homers and 6 RBI.  Judy Johnson was 3 for 5 for Missouri.  Babe Ruth hit two doubles for Boston

Series #11 Recap – Americans vs. Yankees

Game #1: Americans win 5 – 1

It was all the Babe in this one.  Ruth hit three homeruns, knocking in four, to lead Boston to victory.  Steve Hargan ended his personal six game losing streak with a solid outing (8 IP, 6 H, 4 BB, 4 SO, 1 ER).  George Kell was 2 for 3 with a homerun that turned out to be the game winner.  Ed Roush and Freddy Lindstom each had 2 hits for New York.  Luis Aparicio doubled and walked three times.

Game #2: Yankees win 2 – 1

Bid McPhee slapped a 9th inning single into center field to score Roger Bresnahan and send the Yankee fans home happy.  The Americans managed only five hits off of three Yankee pitchers.  Starter Whitey Ford (7 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 5 SO, 1 ER) gave up just a solo homerun to Paul Casanova.  Dazzy Vance went the distance for Boston (8-2/3 IP, 7 H, 5 BB, 7 SO, 2 ER) but was victimized in the 9th by a leadoff walk.

Game #3: Americans win 7 – 0

Boston pitcher Bill Hands scattered four hits to shutout the New York Yankees.  Hands’ line: 9 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0 ER.  Bobby Doerr hit a two-run double in the 1st that gave the Americans an early 3–0 lead.  Oscar Charleston was 2 for 3 with a triple for Boston.

Game #4: Americans win 10 – 0

Boston remained hot and won this one going away.  Bob Gibson kept his Yankees in the game, but once he was removed for a pinch-hitter in the 6th the floodgates opened against the New York pen.  Bobby Doerr was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and a homer.  George Kell was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.  Three Americans pitchers combined for the shutout.  Starter Rube Waddell (6-1/3 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 SO, 0 ER) earned the win.  Three Yankees went 2 for 4: Homerun Baker, Freddy Lindstrom, and Roger Bresnahan.

Series #10 Recap – Americans vs. Spiders

Game #1: Americans win 9 – 1

Boston lit up starter Early Wynn for seven runs in the first three innings and cruised home behind the pitching of Lefty Gomez.  Gomez (9 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 8 SO, 1 ER) lost a shutout in the 9th on back-to-back doubles by Ken Harrelson and Brooks Robinson.  George Kell was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.  Willie Stargell was 2 for 4 with a solo homerun.  Mike Andrews committed two errors that led to runs.

Game #2: Americans win 4 – 2

Monte Irvin delivered a pinch-hit two-run homerun with two out in 9th inning to break a tie game.  Sudden Sam McDowell (8-2/3 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 4 SO, 2 ER) was a tough-luck loser for the Spiders.  Joe Sewell and Willie McCovey were 2 for 4 for Cleveland.  Oscar Charleston and Paul Casanova were 2 for 4 for Boston.

Game #3: Americans win 5 – 2

Babe Ruth walloped a three-run homer and ripped a run scoring double to lead Boston to the victory.  Rube Waddell pitched a strong seven innings (7 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 SO, 2 ER).  Bobby Doerr was 2 for 3 with a homer.  Enos Slaughter knocked a pinch-hit homerun.  Gene Alley was 2 for 4 for Cleveland.

Game #4: Americans win 9 – 3

The Americans hit three 1st inning homeruns to kick-start themselves towards a win.  Ed Delahanty (2 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Babe Ruth (2 runs, 2 walks), and Willie Stargell (2 RBI) homered in the 1st, and Bobby Doerr added a 5th inning dinger.  Joe Sewell and Hal Clark were 2 for 4 for Cleveland.  Enos Slaughter worked three bases on balls.  Frank Bertaina pitched three scoreless innings in earning a save.
