At Sportsman's Park, the St. Louis faithful were treated to an intriguing

pitcher's duel.  Steve Carlton(3-1) finally bested his St. Louis counterpart,

Dick Hughes(1-3), by the score of 3 to 0.

 

Carlton gave Missouri a solid outing.  He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 7 and

1/3 innings.  Carlton struckout 9 St. Louis batters lowering his ERA from

3.47 to 2.64.  Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning. 

 

Orlando Pena earned his 3rd save.  Hughes took the loss.  He pitched 8 innings

giving up 8 hits and 4 walks.
