INT. EMPTY OFFICE FLOOR - NIGHT
Max returns with Alec and S1W, makes a beeline past Logan to Brainiac, still cuffed. He's now inexplicably wearing the blindfold as a HEADBAND.
Max: How'd you know?
Brainiac: Know what?
Alec: "Break an egg"
Brainiac: Was I wrong?
Max: No.
Brainiac: Then what are you so mad about?
Alec: Here's how he knows. Look at this, he's an X.
He's looking at Brainiac's neck, where a BARCODE is trying to peek out from rolls of fat.
Brainiac: Of course I'm an X, what did you think I was? Some schlub with an eating disorder?
Max: Ok. What are you?
Brainiac: What am I?
Alec: She means you don't exactly look like a soldier.
Brainiac: Oh. And you two do? (then, calmer) I'm a concentrate, a battle computer. Basically a General, his staff, two data groups and five logistical support teams. Manticore wanted to combine the computational resources of an entire division in one stealth package.
Alec: "Stealth?"
Brainiac: People tend to look away. They don't remember me. There, you happy?
Max: So, ok, you're like some computer. That doesn't explain how you know things before they happen.
Brainiac: That would be the fat Fourier neural nets they added for heuristics.
Alec: Heuristics?
Brainiac: Future predictions based on probabilities stored in my... are you sure you want to hear this?
Max: So wait. You can see the future.
Brainiac: I can see our future. Yours and mine. That's why I'm here.
He stares at her a long unsettling beat.
Max: I don't know what you think you're seeing, but I don't guarantee you...
She narrows her eyes in disapproval. But it's not at Brainiac. She's spotted something across the room. Brainiac turns to look too...
ACROSS THE ROOM - LOGAN AND ASHA are in close array as he comforts her, or tries to.
INT. LOGAN'S - NIGHT
ON Brainiac, head buried in his hands, in front of the screen.
Max: What are you saying? None of them did it?
Brainiac: (looks up, excited) Maybe all of them did it! (then not) Or maybe not.
He buries his head in his hands again.
Brainiac: I told you. This isn't what I do.
Max: Don't worry about it. You did your best, right?
She pats him on the back, rising to leave.
Brainiac: You don't remember me, do you? From back then at Manticore?
No response. Which means no.

Brainiac: That's alright, I'm designed to be forgettable. But I can remember you. With your short hair and cammies and you could blur and everything. I used to watch you and your friends running around having a blast.
Max: It was no blast, believe me.
Brainiac: When you broke out leaving the rest of us behind, I thought I was going to die I missed you so much.
Max: Look, Brain... we didn't even know eachother.
Brainiac: I knew you. They fed us data on all the X-5s, so we could predict battle behavior. I stayed after every day, learning everything there was to know about you.
Max: Whatever data they fed you, that's not me.
Brainiac: I knew you'd come back to Manticore. And you did. And I knew you'd be involved the second S1W got in trouble. That's why I'm here. (then) I know you better than anyone, Max. I'd do anything for you.
This is a lot more than Max bargained for. She squirms uncomfortably, then..
Max: What I really need you to do is try these pictures again. (indicates screen) And examine the data, or predict the future, or whatever it is you do. Just tell me who sold them out.
Brainiac: Well, examining the known facts, including the specifics of the raid and subsequent liberation of S1W, I can say with 85% certainty, the traitor is...
Max: Yeah?
Brainiac: Well, it looks like me, doesn't it? Only I didn't do it....

SCENE 2 CONTINUED
BRAINIAC dances on the controls, his score still hyper-spooling upward as he whips his head now and ... A HALF DOZEN SUSPECTS- THE S1W herded rudely from the back room by the SWAT team. Among them... ASHA! And the slightly older LEADER of the cell. And a hardass we'll call KILLER. Vid Kid's unnerved but...
BRAINIAC plays calmly on... even as he does an ODD THING. He puts a fat hand behind Vid Kid's head, then leans in over the machine, pressing his face and Vid Kid's flat against the hand controls, somehow ANTICIPATING... LEADER suddenly makes a break, SHOVING an armed SWAT member, bolting. BAM! A SWAT GUY fires a shot which misses but... THE VIDEO GAME shatters just above Brainiac and Vid Kid's bowed heads. Brainiac straightens back up, unconcerned as BAM! SWAT GUY fires a second shot, WINGING LEADER, who's bleeding from the shoulder now; as the entire group is manhandled out of the arcade, Asha helping Leader. Vid Kid is freaked.
Vid Kid: God man, that bullet. How'd you know?
But Brainiac's already waddling off toward...
SCENE 3
EXT. VIDEO ARCADE- NIGHT
The Group is lined up at gunpoint outside the arcade, hands overhead. It's agony for the gore-streaked Leader.
Asha: We need a doctor here!
Swat Guy: Quiet!
Asha: We need a doctor!
Swat Guy JABS her with a rifle barrel as ERRRKKK. A PADDYWAGON screeches up and... BRAINIAC slips into the end of the line, next to Asha, holding his hands up in the air, too, as the S1W is marched into... THE PADDYWAGON the big rear door slammed shut behind Asha, excluding Brainiac, like the Swat Guy never saw him. As the Paddywagon pulls away... BRAINIAC drops his arms, fumbles absently in a pocket of his CARGO PANTS for a candy bar. He takes a bite watching the Paddywagon vanish. Asha's face in the small rear window, staring back...
SCENE 4 INT. JAM PONY- DAY (DAY TWO)
NORMAL is watching the TV as MAX enters, late as usual.
Max: I know, I'm late. But I got a flat.
Normal: Good.
Max: Had to walk two miles for a new tube.
Normal: Right, excellent.
Max: Then the aliens landed and asked directions. They only spoke Martian so that took awhile.
Normal: Yes yes yes. (then loud) You hearing this, people?
He's not responding to Max, he's watching... THE LARGE TV where a NEWSCASTER stands in front of the Video Arcade (from the Teaser), now a crime scene.
Newscaster: Last night here in Sector Four, an anonymous tip led police to this building, headquarters of terrorist group S1W, and the arrest of at least eight members...
RESUME- FAVORING MAX sensing this news will affect her. Normal chatters to the MESSENGERS gathering to watch.
SCENE 8 CONTINUED: (2)
THE VIDEO SCREEN PUSHING on the high scorer's name where BRAINIAC played. It says "MAX." with a HEART next to it.
Alec looks at her, anything but glib now.
Alec: Maybe it is about you.

Brainiac: Hey... Neighbor...
She pays absolutely no attention. Not like she's pretending he's not there. It's like he actually doesn't exist.
Brainiac: I'm kind of expecting someone at, oh, (checks watch) 7:03, and then I'll be away for two days... at least... so I was wondering if maybe, if it's not too much trouble, could you, you know... get my mail? While I'm gone? Neighbor?
She closes her own mailbox, looks up almost startled to see him standing there.
Young Woman: I'm sorry. Did you say something?

Vid Kid: You know, I can't actually remember what he actually looked like.
CUT TO: where "MAX" with the HEART is the high scorer. ADJUST
SCENE 10 INT. VIDEO ARCADE- DAY
Max and Alec are talking to Vid Kid from the night before, still standing by the game.
Vid Kid: You kind of don't notice him.
Alec: (holds up XXXL sweatshirt) Don't notice him?
Vid Kid: It's hard to explain.
Max: (re: huge score) Guy's sure got game.
Vid Kid: Yeah, and he was barely trying. He was just... I don't know, it's like he sees everything.
Max: What do you mean "everything?"
Vid Kid: Ok, this is going to sound crazy, but its like he knows what's going to happen before it happens.
Alec: That does sound crazy.
Vid Kid: He knew the raid was coming.
SCENE 10 CONTINUED:
Alec: Ever think he phoned it in?
Max puts a hand on Alec's arm-- let the kid talk.
Vid Kid: Ok, get this. You see that bullethole there? He ducked before the shot was fired. Made me duck, too. The bullet went right over our heads. Saved my life.
Max: You wouldn't by any chance know where we could find this guy? As Max asks, Alec finds a VIDEO RENTAL CARD in the Sweatshirt pocket. He squints at the lousy handwriting.
Alec: (squints at card) Brian...?
Max: Looks like... Brain. 113 25th Place Apartment 4D
Vid Kid: Just like he said. (then) He told me the hottest chick I'd ever seen was going to come looking for him. I guess that's you, huh?
SCENE 11 INT. BRAINIAC'S APARTMENT- NIGHT
ON BRAINIAC, BRUSHING his teeth, wearing a washcloth as a kind of bib. He rinses, pops his toothbrush into a once nice TOILET KIT that he takes with him to...

SCENE 26 CONTINUED: (2)
Brainiac: There was a point zero five percent chance you were going to lean over and kiss me right then. I was just really hoping.
SCENE 27 INT. EMPTY OFFICE FLOOR- NIGHT
An angry S1W surrounds Logan now.
Killer: She's supposed to be on our side. Why's she protecting him?
Logan: No one's protecting anyone.
Killer: Then where are they?
Leader: What I wanna know is how the guy found out everything about us.
Alec: He's Manticore, that's how. It doesn't mean he called you in.
Max: He saved your sorry asses if you want to know the truth.
They turn to see Max with Brainiac.
Max: And if you want to know who turned you in, just take a look around you.
Killer: That's what he says?
Max: That's what I say.
Asha: Well it's ridiculous.
SCENE 27 CONTINUED:

Brainiac: I think... I think... I think...
They fall silent as Brainiac stammers. A little nauseous.
Brainiac: (quite quickly) Sector police will approach in scatter Y formation, alpha team up the stairwell and bravo in the elevator. Chances are dead even a third team will stake out the roof.
Asha: What's he talking about?
Leader: He's turned us in again.
Max: Shut up!
Brainiac: Egress through the fire stairwell up to the 22nd floor. There's an exhaust fan behind a four foot grate in the west hallway. Use it. It's the only way out.
Max: When? When's it happening?
Brainiac: Now.
Sure enough, they hear a STAMPEDE OF BOOTS running up the fire stairwell.
Max: Go, go! Do what he says! Go!
The Leader and Killer look like they want to take out Brainiac still, but Max herds everyone toward...
ACROSS THE ROOM- A FIRE STAIRWELL where the S1W starts their ascent, stormtrooper FOOTFALLS CLOSING. Max turns back toward Brainiac, but he's not there.
Leader: (at Max) You trust him, you lead the way.
SCENE 27 CONTINUED: (2)
Max and Leader front the exodus now, while...
SCENE 28 INT. EMPTY OFFICE FLOOR- ELEVATORS- NIGHT DING. Elevator doors OPEN and a SWAT TEAM pours out toward Brainiac, storming PAST HIM as if he were invisible. Finally, Brainiac ELBOWS the LAST SWAT GUY in the face, dropping him to the floor. The SWAT recovers, then from bended knee aims his rifle point blank at Brainiac.
Swat Guy: I got one! (then) I think...
As Brainiac slowly raises his hands, under arrest at last...
SCENE 42 CONTINUED: (2)
Max: Wait. Is this why you let yourself get arrested? You knew we'd find this here?
Brainiac: (nods, then) That's how the S1W's been betrayed.
Max sits there in awe. Mystery solved.
CUT TO: SCENE 43 EXT. RAILYARDS- BUILDING- DAY ON ASHA, slumped with the others against the side of the building. Waiting. She takes from her backpack... A BOOK- 'LEAVES OF GRASS' with the poem inside, which she removes now.
ASHA looks at it a long moment, a look that turns to PUZZLEMENT a second before...
Leader: Oh, you took my book.
The Leader is standing over her, looking at the book.
Asha: No. It just ended up in my backpack somehow.
Leader: Lucky for me. I was afraid I'd lost it.
He takes the book and the note from Asha, then returns to his place at the far side of the group. Off Asha, wondering what that was about...

SCENE 47 INT. BUILDING- BASEMENT STAIRWELL- DAY The extererior DOOR flies OPEN, REVEALING Leader...
Leader: This way, C'mon, c'mon.
He directs the S1W into the building. DARK FIGURES thunder DOWN STAIRS past camera. Asha the last.
Asha: Where are we going?
Leader: Down here.
Asha: The gunfire's stopped.
Leader: There's more on the way.

Leader: Just go!
Asha heads down the stairs with huge misgivings, while...
SCENE 48 EXT. RAILYARDS- BUILDING- DAY
Max comes around a corner, catching a glimpse of the door closing behind Leader as he marches the S1W into the basement of the building. She looks up now and...
MAX'S POV- SWAT REINFORCEMENTS screech up, a couple more Hummer's worth.
CUT TO: A WINDOW SHATTERED by a BANDAGED FOOT. REVEAL...
SCENE 49 EXT. RAILYARDS- BUILDING- ALTERNATE ENTRY- DAY
Brainiac bashes out the rest of the window, then goes in feet first, the CANDY BAR in his hand the last thing disappearing through the casement as he drops into...
