Autobot Leader Optimus Prime was one of the many Transformers who went into emergency stasis lock when the giant Autobot ship Ark crashed into a volcano on ancient Earth. There they remained dormant for four million years until the volcano erupted and awoke them all.
Or so it was thought.
The Maximals soon discovered that being on ancient Earth, the Ark and all its passengers were vulnerable targets of Megatron and his evil schemes. In an attempt to alter history in favor of the Decepticons and Predacons, Megatron attempted to destroy Optimus Prime.
Optimus Prime was not destroyed, and the Maximals with the help of the Predacon Blackarachnia managed to stop Megatron. However, Optimus Prime was severely damaged and needed immediate repair. While his physical body was being repaired, Optimus Primal took Optimus Prime's spark into his own body, resulting in the creation of Optimal Optimus.
Eventually Optimus Prime was repaired and history restored. However, this adventure had showed the Maximals that their mission was now to protect their past, which included legendary Autobot leader Optimus Prime.
