The original Decepticon Leader Megatron was one of the most powerful, cunning, intelligent and dangerous Transformers ever created. It was Megatron who gathered Decepticon forces on Cybertron during its first Golden Age and began the Great Wars between the Autobots and Decepticons.
Upon following the Autobot ship Ark into space, Megatron and his crew boarded the Autobot ship and in the fight, the Ark crashed into a volcano on Earth. A majority of Megatron's crew crashed with the Autobots and awoke in 1984 by a volcanic explosion. Shortly afterwards, Megatron led his Decepticons against the Autobot forces of Optimus Prime in a renewed struggle. Ultimately he lost in battle with Optimus Prime and was changed into the powerful Galvatron by the planet gobbling entity, Unicron.
Megatron always knew there was a possibility the Great War might not go in his favor, so he etched a secret message onto the Voyager spacecraft's Golden Disk. It would be the Predacon criminal Megatron who would eventually learn about this secret message and try to take on the mission his namesake left for him. That mission was to use Transwarp technology, enter the past and destroy the Autobots before they could ever rise to power. It is a plan the new Megatron had every intention of fulfilling!
Although he may not be aware of it, Megatron had a role in the rebirth of Predacon leader Megatron when their two sparks both inhabited one body, changing Megatron from a Transmetal T-Rex to a powerful Transmetal Dragon! This terrible form was equal in power to that of Optimal Optimus, and pushed the Beast Wars to a new phase.
The original Megatron eventually regained his spark back thanks to the efforts of the Maximals under the leadership of Optimal Optimus. The loss of the original Megatron's spark did not change the Predacon leader Megatron's form however.
