She was originally a Sumerian storm goddess, mentioned in texts as far back as around 2400 B.C.E. before being assimilated in Hebrew scriptures. Lilith was said to be the wife that Adam had before Eve, who left Eden because she resented Adam's attempts to subordinate her; she later was demonized as a figure of terror, feared as a demon or vampire, and a night monster. Keats describes her as a serpent which assumed the shape of a beautiful woman "palpitating snake ... of dazzling hue, vermillion spotted, golden, green and blue".
