Well, this is just to get me started on my blog. I am currently living in Baotou, China. I teach English as a Second language to Adults, Teens, and Children.

Being a foreign teacher in China is quite the experience. I will try to relay some of my thoughts as I experience them.

This blog is mostly for my students. I want to give them the chance to communicate with me directly outside of the classroom.

Students, what kind of things would you like me to write about in here?

GREAT JOB VICTOR AND HANNA...

You are the first two students on the site. I am glad that you made it. Please check back often I hope to update this site weekly.

I can't wait until Saturday. My TC class will be fun. We are going to have our first debate, we are going to discuss prefrences of music, and of course we are going to watch part of "the sound of muisc" I think there will be some good opritunities for practicing all parts of the English language.

Due to the limited data transferring speed, your video clip of C. Aguilera was frequently interruped and stopped while I was watching, but I do see her performance and hear her voice. I think nowadays it is quite common to see a pop singer to dress like that (thanks God she does not wear a bikini!)and it is also quite natrual there are some of the words related to sex for it is a song about love. Of cause, it may be not suitable for young children, but if you switch on your TV, open a pop magzine or newspapers, you may see something even more horrible. Furthermore, the children today are not as naive as when we were their age. They seems tends to accept them easily. It is a real challenge to keep them away from such kind of things. Afterall, I like to point out that it is the parents' responsibility to tell the children what is right and what is wrong and give the reasons(at least they themselves shall understand it is right or wrong.), and more important, never do wrong or give bad examples before your children. That I think is much more effective than just forbid them to see something bad.

my son is studying guita,as you know many famous music came from Amarica,he has a lot of chance to play American music, that's why I heard Christina's songs before,I only admit my son listen to her songs, not video.my son always download beautiful music on internet, but I must check them one by one,and then decide whether he can watch the video.I think we should teach our children how to learn adventage from others,it is the most important thing, really!!!

Mary,

I think you have some great ideas. As I have said in class, I believe that Listening Speaking AND Thinking in English are important. I hope that my class is good enough for you, I know that your English level is very high. It is my hope that you and your classmates learn something new every class. I wish that we had more time to spend together as a class. This would enable me to spend more time in EACH area. As it is, we only have a short time together each week, so sometimes I will focus on Listening, Sometimes speaking, and sometimes thinking, But I try to let you speak more than anything else. (I know this week we did more listening in your class, but I felt that this was an area we needed to work on.)
Most of all I ask that you trust me, I value your opinion (and all of my students), and I will work with your class in ways that will help you.
Again, thank you for your advice, if I am not learning, I am not living.

Mr.Schmit,
I do agree that we should practise more speaking in the class, however, if you do not have a good hearing, how can you response to other's words correctly? I think the ability of listening shall also be stressed. In the class I heared that some students complained that "I can understand Mr. Schmit well when he is speaking slow and using simpler words, but once he speak faster and there are more difficult words, I will not be able to follow him any longer." I also remember that time you invited our group of six students who won the spelling competition to have a meal with you, finally none of them came except me. When I asked them about the reason, most of them said they did not notice or understand your invitation. From those cases I find the importance of improve the ability of hearing. I think it is the foundation of communication. By the way, this morning I probably gave you a wrong E-mail address of me, which omitted".cn" at the end. the correct one should be "ezhjohn@ yahoo.com.cn". Welcome you to write to me later. thanks!

Last evening,Malissa, Jack and I visited Mr. Schmit’s. Mr. and Mrs. Schmit taught us making two traditional American dishes—meat ball and French fry, and we had dinner there. At the supper we also enjoyed the delicious cookies made by Mrs. Schmit and the cherry juice. After the supper Mrs. Schmit sang a popular Chinese song “The Oriental Pearl” in Chinese (her wonderful Chinese skills really impressed me) while her lovely daughter danced for us. All those were wonderful and unforgettable. It was a great experience to us, because we not only have learned many American culture tips that are impossible gotten from textbooks but also experienced in person the warmth of American people. I love that evening and I can’t wait to have more opportunities to have such kind of activity.
