Plettenberg Bay

We are now a exactly a week in South-Africa. It's amazing here, I can tell you! Altough many things people might have told you are exaggerated, the things they say about the country is true. It is beautiful!

Plettenberg Bay, or Plett, is a sort of holiday place for the people in Cape Town. We go to the beach every day, but the sun here is really strong because of a very thin ozone layer, so you can't be in the sun for too long and you really need a good sunscreen!

In the see you have to look out for blue bottles. Blue bottles are little creatures wich look like jelly fish, exept that they are blue. When they sting it hurts a lot! A friend, Caitlin, who is in the group we are in now got stung by one and she said it really hurt a lot!

The driving here is a very different from the driving in Holland. I would say it's worse, but the South-African people probably wouldn't agree. I can't explain how it is, but I'm scared when I'm in the car. Of course the driving here is as the English driving, which is at the left hand side. It took me a while to get used to that and that is quite dangerous, but now, after a week, I'm starting to get used to it.

We almost have a braai every day. A braai is a sort of Barbeque. All South-Africans say that a braai is so much better and with more meat than a barbeque, but I think it's all a bit exaggerated. The braais I had until now were very small. There's not much meat and it isn't that much better than in Holland. The only difference is I think that the meat overall is better here.

I finally found out where the name Rand (that's the name for the money here) comes from. A long time ago, people started the search for gold. The first place they found gold was .....rand (sorry about the dots but I sort of forgot the name. I'll ask Tarryn again and write it down immediately). It is a mountain range. That's where the name comes from!
As you can see on the picture, the big five are on the money. The big five are: the elephant, the leopard, the rhino, the lion and the buffalo. Plants are put on the coins.

Rand

I don't have a lot more time left because I'm in an internet caf. I'll start with the last bit I want to say, which is that it's all so cheap here! 1 Euro is about 7.40 Rand. Yesterday I bought shoes for R100.00, wich is about 12 Euro! Food, drinks, clothes, everyting is cheap! So if you want a cheap holiday, go to South-Africa!! Greetings from a sunny South-Africa! Bye Love, Leoniek
