My first impression of the Herschel Girls School
It was our first day of school today. School starts at fifteen to eight. At eight assembly starts, which ends at half past 9! Many teachers and the headmistress spoke and welcomed everyone back in the school because the summer holidays were just over and the new year started. A thing that I mentioned here in South-Africa is that all the South-African people are so proud of their country. At Herschel, this is the case as well, but they are more proud of the school itself, proud of the students from last year who did so well, proud of achievements in sports and all the other things you can think of a school can be proud of. They want to impress and encourage the students by calling out some impressive marks. The headmistress said she loves cricket (which she obviously doesnt because she had some facts which were absolutely not right), and named one of the good players of the South-African cricket team. She sayd that the students should take him as an example because hes done so well with saving the team. Almost everything is based on achieving the highest grades, highest everything! I dont really like this because it is so fake. A teacher told me that when a student fails a subject they go through the test again and again until they see where they can add some marks so that the student can go to the next level! That is really not a good thing! At the end of assembly we all had to stand up and sing the school song. This meant, crossing arms, singing with the highest voice you have and swaying! I stood there in the middle of everything and I almost started laughing because its all so weird and fake! One great big family! Yeah right... There are some good things on Herschel though. For example the fact that its a girls school has quite some advantages. Everyone is relaxed, you can do what you want without thinkig about the way you look. Also, if you really want to pay attention you can because there are no irritating boys who disturb the classes. Another good thing, or maybe a bad thing, its debatable, are the school uniforms. At first you think that you look stupid and like a nurse, but at the end you feel comfortable in it and relaxed. This was it for now, I have to go to bad early because tomorrow morning I have to wake up at 6 AM! Bye! Leoniek |
