Polished Nails
A night was planned, nothing was going wrong
The streamers were hung, they played their favorite songs
The cakes were baked, the dishes were cleaned
But there was something that remained to be seen
Not one person there could know
What would happen to the girl with the red painted toes

Friends arrived, games were played
Everyone was happy, the scene had been laid
A night that started out so great
Not soon after forced happiness to wait
A dark man left, he turned to go
But not after casting a glance at the girl with the red painted toes

Hours went by and drinks were poured
Laughter filled the room, everyone's spirit soared
The young girl was having the time of her life
It would soon be cut short by the sharpest knife
For misfortune would soon be obliged to show
What would happen to the girl with the red painted toes

In her heart there played a song, on her face the biggest grin
That's when the dark man strolled back in
He needed a partner and although she was quite unstable
She stepped up to join him at the table
And as some saw her eyes begin to close
They smiled at the girl with the red painted toes

She smiled back and quickly opened her eyes
They lost the game, she apoligized
It was ok, he told her, it wouldn't matter soon
As he mentioned heading into a different room
With a note of conviction, she tried to oppose
The poor, mixed up girl with the red painted toes

Before she had time to stop and think
Her head was banged upon the sink
She panicked, she said no, she wanted to run
But was frozen there as if he held a gun
Next to her, on the floor, lay her clothes
The frightened girl with the red painted toes

She tried to yell "I don't even know your name!"
But to him this all seemed a dark, cruel game
"Listen, bitch," was all he could say
As he stole her dignity away
She was tossed to the floor, completely exposed
The hysterical girl with the red painted toes
She gagged and escaped as quick as could be
Because his grip softened and she was released
She stared at him, her face full of blame
As she once again shouted "I don't even know your name!"
She silently thanked God as she gathered her clothes
And slid on her shoes to cover those red painted toes

The dark man left and shut the door
He left that "bitch," that "slut," that "whor"
She cleaned things up until she could no longer stand
Picking up after that joke of a man
She went in the next room, where no one would know
To wash her hair, her stomach, and her red painted toes

They tell her that as her face lay pale
He told them of a different tale
One that put her at fault
A story he made so he wouldn't be caught
But she was surrounded by friends, and so it goes
That everyone believed in the girl with the red painted toes

Who would have thought when she prepared for the night
That she would have to put up such a tragic fight?
No one could have guessed as she helped prepare the cake
The punishment she would be forced to take
Was it her fault for wearing those new, nice clothes?
Was it her fault for choosing red and painting her toes?

Was it her fault for choosing to party?
Should she feel guilty? Should she feel sorry?
Not a bit, not at all, there's nothing she could say
She tried to call out, she tried to get away
But still, it will take some time before she truely knows
That it wasn't her fault, despite those red painted toes

Her friends have helped get her through
With their smiles, their ways of sayin "I love you"
There's even someone who can make her forget for a while
With his laugh, his voice, his bold bright smile
She'll hold her head high, she'll be proud to know
That she's a strong woman, with pride in her red painted toes.
A friend came by to check things out
She tried to grab attention, she tried to call out
But all she could manage was a threatened groan
The dark man loved to make her moan
Tears filled her eyes, she tried to keep them closed
The watery-eyed girl with the red painted toes

She thought about sinking her teeth into that senitive skin
But could she get away? Was that a game she could win?
Or would he hurt her further? Would he beat her down?
He had already turned her world upside down
The answers to these questions she would never know
The broken spirit, the girl with the red painted toes

She clenched her jaw, and told him to stop
But he threw her down, he got on top
And just when he tried to get inside
Just when she thought she would die
He threw up all over her stomach, his clothes
He threw up on the girl with the red painted toes
