Rock Research
Daniel is comparing his rock with several information cards to see what type of rock he has.
On Friday students brought in rocks that they had found or have collected. We discussed how rocks are made, the different type of rocks, and then we did some rock investigation. Four different tests were completed to find out the hardness, the color, if it would sink or float, and if certain materials were present.
Devan is recording the information he has collected.
Here is the streak test. Students scratched their rock on the back of a ceramic tile to find out the color of their rock.
Nikki, Devan, Bailey and Alexis are hard at work.
Here is the scratch test to determine how hardness. Willie is using a steal nail to try and scratch his rock.
We also used our fingernail and a copper penny. Most of our rocks were very hard.
This is our bubble test where students put vinegar on the rocks and look to see if it bubbles.
Austin is testing his rock for bubbles but he didn't find any.
Here Joseph and RJ are checking to see if their rock will sink or float. These both sank to the bottom but Willie's white rock (in the scratch test picture) actually floated!
